Citizen Kane and Snow White
When one thinks of comparing Citizen Kane to other great movies Snow white and the seven dwarfs is usually farthest from mind. The movies seem at first to be complete opposites. However the movies are very similar on many key points. Both movies were made at the end of the Great depression and were innovators in many ways, but people’s reactions to them differed greatly in key areas. In 1938 Disney released the very first full length animated movie in English and Technicolor while Orson Welles released Citizen Kane in 1941. According to History.com Disney fought a mass of doubters including his own wife in order to produce Snow white, she was known to state that no one would be able to sit still for that long to such a simple story. While pre-release Citizen Kane had many positive reviews. It wasn’t until both movies were released that this turned around. Disney’s own wife was one of the biggest skeptics warning him that “audiences, especially adults, would not be able to sit through a feature length cartoon about dwarfs. Without investors Disney borrowed 1 million dollars from the Bank of America. (afi.com). Disney innovated hundreds of new cameras, styles, and even musical scores to make the movie the hit it was. Many of the scenes in snow white have been copied such as the scene where snow white drops the apple at her “death” and the single lit window of the queens castle were both borrowed by Welles for Citizen Kane, the first to show the passing of life to death and the second as a way of foreshadowing.
Orson Welles is a legend in itself. He is a dedicated director, actor, and artist. An artist in the sense he directed, produced, and was the star in the film Citizen Kane.' The film won an award for best screenplay that was co-written by Welles. Citizen Kane' brings into light many social problems between countries, relationships, and also between competing newspaper companies. The film was a big controversy when it was first released on a delay (because of personal conditions with W.R. Hearst). It brings into light how a newspaper should react and also brings the corruption of politics. War was breaking out in Europe and throughout the entire film Kane states there will be no war. He ignores the fact people are being killed, tortured, and rounded up like livestock because of Adolf Hitler. The film was released on May 1, 1941 a few days before Joseph Stalin becomes premier of Russia, a day before Nazis took over Netherlands, and eight days before the English army breaks the German codes.
Orson Wells’ film Citizen Kane received terrific reviews as soon as it opened in 1941. While the average movie buff would not value Citizen Kane as much, for the critics, directors and film students: it provides a technical handbook as to the nuts and bolts of how a film is to be assembled. It has now been chosen as the greatest American film in a number of polls due to the many remarkable scenes and performances, cinematic and narrative techniques and experimental innovations in photography, editing and sound.
Citizen Kane, is a 1941 American film, written, produced, and starred by Orson Welles. This film is often proclaimed by critics,filmmakers, and fans as one of the best if not the best film ever made. Citizen Kane is an unbelievable film becuase of how advanced it is compared to other films of its time. In the film, the producer used many different narrative elements to capture the audiences imagination. It truly is astounding how the filmmakers used certain editing techniques, sounds, and different narrative elements to illustrate the story and the plot. Although the plot isnt exactly captivating to the present day audience, this film is still amazing due to how much work and effort went into making it.

Walt wanted each of the dwarfs in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to be a distinct individual. The solution was to create names for them that would reflect their personalities. (Miller NP) "Snow White," which took three years to make, was released in 1937. This was the beginning of what we all know today as Disney movies.
Snow white and the seven dwarfs is a classic fairy tale, however most people only know the Disney version of the story, but before Disney’s version there were many others. One of the first versions was written by the Grimm brothers.
For this project, two films were viewed. The first one is Annie, a film made in the early 80s about a girl in an orphanage. She is then brought to live in a mansion for a week with one of the richest men in this world. He doesn’t like her at first, but he learns to love the little girl, and adopt her. The second film, Cinderella man, is about a boxer who loses his job after he breaks his hand during a match. He is then left to fend for his family. He begins to slowly rise up as a boxer and fight again, much to his wife’s distaste. For this project, I will discuss the similarities and differences between the films, and the time period, setting, and characters. Annie is the first film.
Walt Disney Films are known to be as an incredible and outstanding fantasy stories producer. It created more than a hundred of films. Majority of what has been produced rely on fictional stories. The films that were released used animation to capture children’s interest and musically performed as well. Walt Disney produced fantasy stories like The Little Mermaid 1989; Sleeping Beauty 1959; Beauty and the Beast 1991; Cinderella 1950 and more. The tales most often than not were always about the life of a princess in search of her prince charming.
After World War II Disney came out with a few more feature animated movies such as: Cinderalla, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty. One thing that Snow White, Cinderalla, and Sleeping Beauty all have in common is that they are all stories about princesses who live happily ever after with their prince.
In the past the Disney’s version of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” has been recognized as being the original story of Snow White even though it was produced in 1937, a hundred and twenty-five years after the original. The Newest version of Snow White called “Mirror, Mirror” came along in 2012, exactly two hundred years after the Brothers Grimm’s version was published. This version brought comedy and color into the story. As a result, they changed a little more of the story to make it more appealing to an audience of today’s generations.
