Belgium Government v. United States Government
Belgium is a small country located in Northern Europe, just West of Germany. The government in Belgium is a Federal Parliamentary Democracy. It is held under a Constitutional Monarchy. A Federal Parliamentary Democracy is when the majority party forms the government and a prime minister is voted leader. A Constitutional Monarchy is when a king or queen is the Head of State. “As a constitutional monarch, the Sovereign must remain politically neutral. On almost all matters the Sovereign acts on the advice of ministers. However, the Sovereign retains an important political role as Head of State, formally appointing prime ministers, approving certain legislation and bestowing honors.” (Role of the Monarchy 4) The monarch is a position that is passed down based on heredity. The king/queen appoints the prime minister with the approval of parliament. (Belgium: Government 1) The people of the country don’t vote for their leader.

A monarchy is a form of government in which a single individual holds all the power in government. Since 1918 Britain has been governed in a Democratic system but held a lot of the same customs that it had when it was a monarchy (like a royal family etc.). Canada was a part of the British Monarchy when it was still around and unfortunately is still a part of the monarchy system that remains in Britain today. In 1867 the British North America Act was established and formed the Dominion of Canada by Queen Victoria. Since then Canada has grown to have its own customs and traditions but Britain’s crown is unitary throughout all jurisdictions in Canada. Queen Elizabeth the second is the sovereign of Canada she is the head of state; she must remain neutral politically in Canada and govern the people of Canada according to their respective laws and customs. The question too many Canadians today is whether or not Canada should abolish the British Monarchy in Canada. Many Canadians feel the monarchy is considered purely ceremonial and lacks legitimacy; attachments to the monarchy in Canada mostly just exists in older Canadians, younger generations in Canada have different views which support that the monarchy should be abolished in Canada.
Monarchy is a method where a single person oversees the government. This head of state reigns within bounds of a constitution but still creates a single entity with extreme power. Personal beliefs often override best practices.
The Prime Minister is the Head of Government in Canada. Almost always, the Prime Minister is also the leader in the House of Commons, the assembly of ‘common’ people elected by the population to run government. Multiple steps are required to select a Prime Minister. First, there must be a vote of party members at a national convention that decide who will be their leader. If their party is already in power, or holds the majority of seats within Parliament, the chosen leader will assume the role of Prime Minister immediately. If not, the leader must lead the party through a successful election process to become Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is not elected directly by the entire population through the election. He or she is elected in an indirect manner when his or her party wins an election with the most seats in the House of Commons. The Prime Minister can lead the country for a maximum of five years before another election. However, historically and by tradition, most will call an election within four years depending on their perceived standing among the voters. The Queen is represented by a Governor General and appoints on recommendations of Australia’s Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is a member of Parliament and occasionally chooses the cabinet. The National Parliament of Australia is also similar to the United States having two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Both of these chambers are responsible for national laws and legislation has to be approved by both houses before it can become law. The House has 150 members which are reflected by population and the elections are at least every three years.

The Commons House is a community elected by society. They debate on laws. The Senate, which is associated with citizens “...appointed by the governor-general under advice of the prime Minister…” (online.culturegrams.com) either approves, changes, or rejects the laws from the Commons House. A law will be appointed if the Commons House, the Senate, and the governor-general approve. This arrangement works because of the immense population.

Constitutional monarchy can be described as a form of government in which a monarch acts as the head of state but functions within the parameters or guidelines of a written and/or unwritten constitution. Although the government may function officially in the monarch’s name, the monarch does not set public policies or choose the political leaders. Constitutional monarchy therefore differs from absolute monarchy where the monarch controls political decision making without being restricted by constitutional constraints. Consequently, a constitutional monarch has often been defined as a sovereign who reigns but does not rule. Constitutional monarchies have also been called limited monarchies, crowned republics or parliamentary monarchies.
It is well known that the British political system is one of the oldest political systems in the world. Obviously, it was formed within the time. The United Kingdom of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the constitutional monarchy, providing stability, continuity and national focus. The monarch is the head of state, but only Parliament has the right to create and undertake the legislation. The basis of the United Kingdom’s political system is a parliamentary democracy. Therefore, people think the role of the Queen as worthless and mainly unnecessarily demanding for funding, but is it like that?
The legislature is made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The legislative role involves; making laws and general rules that govern the powers of public authorities that maintain the structure and conduct of the ordinary citizen as well as private institutions. The Queen holds primary authority in parliament, however parliament does not directly make new legislation that is passed by executive bodies which receive their power from parliament. The executive carries out the general policy determined by cabinet. The public authorities role is to implement the law constructed by the legislative body, support social and economic welfare , maintain order and provide security, conducting public services for example; health, electricity. The judicial has the power to administer the law by settling disputed questions of fact and law while observing the law made by parliament and interpreting it court. This function is executed by professional independent judges whose roles are exercised in criminal and civil courts.
