The new age of the coming decade is becoming dominated by technology. People all around are connected to technology and the internet in some way or another. Computers are no longer restricted to our homes. With laptops that rival the hardware of desktop computers, technology is no longer restricted to our homes. With the emergence of tablets and smartphones, people are able to carry mini-computers in their pockets. Both tablets and smartphones have full, unrestricted access to the internet just like a laptop or a desktop. Technology is even integrated with the places we go. Microsoft’s products include recent iterations like the Microsoft Surface, while Apple has a new Macbook in development. But their technologies are not limited to standard computers. Both companies are well respected in the smartphone market. Apple’s iPhone 6 is the world’s best selling smartphone and Microsoft’s line of Window’s phones are struggling to keep the competition. There is also the wearable technology revolution that has just begun with Apple’s Apple Watch sparking popularity in the market. Last, but not least, there is a significant amount of popularity in both Apple’s iPad and Microsoft’s Surface which is essential and touchscreen computer. Microsoft’s surface blurs the lines between laptop and tablet, with the Surface running a full version of Windows 8, while the newest iPad still runs the same operating system as the iPhone series, iOS. Their products are always pit against each other in an ultimate debate as to which one is better, in a manner reminiscent of the Pepsi vs Coca-cola debate. But there is a problem with this comparison. Although, both Microsoft and Apple produce widely similar products, they are not meant to directly compete with each other. This is because both companies are aimed toward different target audiences. Apple has a massively low barrier for entry. All of its products are widely unified and are easy to use. Even the most complicated settings are presented in an easy and manageable format. There is little effort needed to connect an iPhone to a Mac and sync music, photos, or videos. This is the reason why Apple is so popular, it can appeal to anyone. Apple was founded by Steve Jobs with the idea of the personal computer; a computer that is easily used by anyone. This is one their products are so resistant to change because doing so would disrupt that unity. Microsoft on the other hand has also created a personal computer. Although, it may seem simply to use at first, the many menus and clutter it takes to perform simple tasks are difficult. It takes much more effort to use a Windows computer than a Mac.
