American literature in the early days talks a lot about spiritual beliefs and different ways of writing. Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are both Puritan authors from the 1700’s. Anne and Jonathan have different views on God and their ways of life from each other. Bradstreet, a housewife and author shows some of her ways in her writings To my Dear and Loving Husband, and Upon the Burning of Our House. Edwards, a preacher and author shows some of his ways in his writing Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Both of their views on god and life completely vary. They provide interesting views on spiritual beliefs and different ways of writing. Bradstreet and Edwards have very different views on God. Bradstreet uses writing as a way to connect to god. In her poem Upon the Burning of Our House Bradstreet says, “And to my God my heart did cry, To strengthen me in my distress” (lines 8-9). Bradstreet’s poetry is more calm and loving, while Edward’s sermons are harsh and scary. Bradstreet’s poetry is calm and loving because she talks about how she loves her husband and how there is still good in the world. “My love is such that rivers cannot quench Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense” (lines 7-8). Edward’s sermons are harsh and scary because he talks about hell a lot and it has a dark feel to it. “The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pressure of God, and that of an angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood” (126).
