Over the past few years police have been under serious scrutiny for their handling of high risk situations that result in citizens deaths. Part of where many believe the problem lies, is with the perception of law enforcement and how communities interact with them. The authors of “Revisiting concept and theories of community policing” though were coming from an international background, believe that different communities require different needs and different types of law enforcement personalities. (p. 51-52). Yero, Othman, Samah, & Sulaiman, (2012). Community policing eventually encourages an improved relationship between communities and law enforcement. The authors go on to explain one of the many benefits of community policing. A key point they make is that community policing helps develop a healthier relationship between officers in the area and its community members. (p.267-268). If an officer and community members interact more positively then that helps with efficient police work. This should create an increased comfort level because of the familiar faces and familiar behavioral expectations. With that comfort comes trust, and assistance with achieving the goal at hand. The goal of all parties involved should be to solve and deter crime. The effort from all parties to become a team and work together by removing that distrust will help by enacting community policing. Yero, Othman, Samah, & Sulaiman, (2012). According to Sozer & Merlo, (2013) community policing would decrease crime rate significantly. This is because many community members will earn the trust of the law enforcement. This trust will then increase communication and with that communication will come information and assistance that will ultimate help solve crimes. Increase production among police officers means a happier community overall.
