a) Commitment and Loyalty: (Elizabeth and John Proctor) Elizabeth still showed loyalty to John even though he cheated on her. When Elizabeth became suspicious of Proctor when he said he was alone with Abigail, Elizabeth was still committed to him. On page 61 Elizabeth says she does not judge John and she thinks he is still a good man, despite the affair he had with Abigail. (Abigail and the girls) Abigail was the leader of the girls and had them manipulated into being loyal to her. On page 120 Abigail and the girls put on a performance to convince the court that Mary Warren bewitched them. 2) Vanity means excessive pride in or admiration of one 's own appearance or achievements. I disagree with Parris because Proctor did not refuse to confess because he has excessive pride he did it to not ruin the names of his friends. Also he wanted to be a good role model for his children (page 144).

3) An example from The Crucible that demonstrates that certainty can be dangerous is when Danforth, Parris and Hale trusted Abigail and her word. It led to hysteria and it got out of control. In the end they realized Abigail was lying and could not be trusted, when she left town. Another example could be that Mrs. Putnam was certain someone murdered her babies, so she sent her daughter Ruth to Tituba to speak to spirits. This led to a medical issue of Ruth.

4) Act 2 changes the play because Elizabeth is being set up and we are able to witness it. The audience is able to witness the hysteria beginning. For example John Proctor he portrayed evil by committing adultery with Abigail and while all the hysteria was going on he wasn’t really attempting to do much until the end, when it directly affected him. However John is good because he wanted to protect his wife, and friends and he did what he felt was right. Another character that portrayed both good and evil is Reverend Hale. In the beginning in a way he provoked the confession out of Tituba, and helped create the hysteria. However, he was good because in the ending he realized the truth and tried to save the lives of innocent people by begging them to confess.

8) The similarities between Mccarthyism and The Crucible is that both were the practice of unfair allegations and using unfair investigative techniques. In addition people that were accused of being communist were blacklisted and some were arrested as well. Also it was treason without proper evidence. In the Crucible the government was forcing confessions, and used false evidence. Also who ever was accused were
