In this scene, with the lights off and the room lit by candlelight, two men appear at the house and knock on the door. Abby and Martha peek at them through the window, but do not recognize them, so they pretend that they are not home. However, the two men let themselves in, and the camera zooms in on the first man’s face, which looks like the face of Frankenstein’s monster. After talking to these men, the aunts then realize that this man is their nephew Jonathan, and that the second man is the plastic surgeon Dr. Einstein, who is a short, alcoholic German, and an example of visual comedy. To add some humor to this dark moment, we find out why Jonathan looks like a monster. Before Dr. Einstein operated on Jonathan, for the third time, he observed a picture of a monster from a movie while he was intoxicated, causing him to incorrectly restyle Jonathan’s face. It begins with Dr. Einstein is attempting to warn Mortimer that Jonathan is about to perform something terrible to him. Nevertheless, Mortimer pays no attention to the doctor and does not heed his warning. Dr. Einstein then exclaims, “At least people in plays act like they got sense” and “how can somebody be so stupid.” Mortimer then goes on to explain a play to the doctor in which the main character had no sense. However, this play that Mortimer is reiterating is perfectly describing the situation he is currently in; the character is in a house with murderers, ignores the person warning him, pays no attention to his surroundings, sits down in a chair ready to be tied up, then the murderer ties him up and gags him. This is a form of irony called situational irony, and it allows the audience to relate Mortimer to the character in the play, with neither of them having sense. As Mortimer is tied up, in a position where struggling strangles him, Jonathan unlatches and opens the case filled with surgical tools. As they prepare to commence the operation, Dr. Einstein tells Jonathan that he cannot focus without a drink, because his bottle is empty. He then proceeds in finding the poisoned wine and pouring a glass for him and Jonathan, which causes suspense and a possible ironic ending. However, before they are able to drink it, Mortimer’s other brother Teddy steps out of his room
