I recently have had many distractions and the people that care for me, want me to be there for them. For example, my best friend Grace would tell me about how her mom does not want to talk to her because she didn’t go visit her. All I responded to Grace was, ‘’ so, I’m hungry’’ and Grace yells at me crying, ‘’ why can’t you be there for me when I need you the most aren’t you my friend!?.’’ What hurts me the most is that I get distracted easily and I have had situations where I forget what people ask me to do or just don’t respond at all. The book, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, describes Joey’s problems at home and school. The author, Jack Gantos, leads the reader to assume Joey is ADHD after he states, “I’m wired” (Gantos, 1998, p. 3). Although Gantos describes Joey’s issues in considerable detail, Gantos never explicitly articulates Joey’s diagnosis. This paper defines attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the impacts on Joey’s behavior in academics, and social/family relationships. Finally, a critique is provided on the different interventions used to address Joey’s behavior.
Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is the most common psychiatric condition effecting 9.5% of school-aged children in the United States (intuniv, 2013). If the disorder goes untreated, it will cause more long-term side effects and difficulties for the individual as an adult. Adults who have this condition face several adversities in every day life, such as impulsive behavior, low self-esteem and poor work performance. People are not aware of the complications that come with ADHD in adults. Not knowing the symptoms of the disease can cause people to not be sympathetic when they are interacting with someone with disorder.
Ashley has a previous diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Ashley has poor judgment, is impulsive, and is defiant toward authority figures and peers. This affects Ashley’s ability to achieve to her fullest potential academically, and have positive interactions with adults, or peers. She also displays low frustration tolerance, and is easily triggered in situations and by other people. Her impulsive reactivity often worsen situations, especially due to the lack of insight Ashley has about her behaviors. Ashley’s inability to regulate her emotions heightens her reactivity in triggering situations. Of the American adult population, 5.4 percent have a serious mental illness. These health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, behavior, or some combination of these. They are also associated with distress and sometimes impaired functioning. In 1990 the total cost of mental health services in the U.S. was $148 billion. According to a new report by the Mental Health Foundation, one in five children suffer from a mental health problem. Attention deficit hyperactive disorder is a mental illness that is diagnosed mainly in young children and doesn’t always disappear in adulthood.” All we know is that this genetic, inherited condition [ADHD] is not due to brain damage at all but rather a variation in how the brain functions.” Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) includes symptoms and characteristics that can be placed in one of three categories: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. These characteristics commonly leave a person with ADHD with lack of attention span, easily distracted, fidgety, struggling to stay seated, having trouble engaging in calm activities, impatient, and talking excessively or out of turn. A new study by researchers says that hyperactive children have behavioral differences due to under active parts of their brain, a biological malfunction, rather than due to way they were brought up. This was revealed by a magnetic scanning device that allowed researchers to look at the brains of children diagnosed with ADHD. These studies and statistics reinforce the claim that mental illnesses are not invented simply to justify drugging of children and a disease that needs be educated to the public for better understanding. Rather, ADHD is an illness that affects many people throughout their lives. This topic is often misunderstood by the public. The media and medical community need to educate the positive side of this controversy and not just show the opposing view, which often times misrepresented by the media.

The argument made by the speaker Salif Mahamane is and portrays logos and pathos on many occasions throughout his speech. However, he lacks information that appeals to ethos. His hypothesis is that ADHD is not a disorder, but instead those who are diagnosed with this particular neuro-cognitive profile are misunderstood. Individuals with the label of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder experience increased peer related issues, have a higher documented rate of injuries inflicted, and are known as defiant and disobedient due to the implied symptoms of this disorder.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. If I told someone I had a disability one may never know, and that's what makes me who I am today. Throughout middle school I struggled severely with academics. Diversity can be the sum of the ways that people are both alike and different. In order to avoid conflict, and have all employees work as a cohesive team, managers must educate themselves, and their employees on the topic of cultural diversity. In order for your practices to be considered effective, you must not only respect and recognize an employee’s diversity, you must use their difference to benefit them.

Elements such as skills, abilities, experience, values, age, and education could be part of a diverse footprint in an organization. Other important attributes related to diversity include disabilities, religion, sexual orientation, and marital status (Guillame et al., 2013). The adoption of diversity in the workplace has the potential to increase organizational effectiveness in many ways.
