“College graduates aren’t suckers; they’re the winners in a globally competitive economy” (Hrabowski 260). In this quote, author Freeman Hrabowski is bluntly stating that people who receive a higher education are more suitable to succeed in having a good and stable life. Most people believe this thought, and the statistics do support it as well. In the article, “College Prepares People for Life” Hrabowski emphasizes the importance of receiving a higher education as it not only prepares you for a job, but it will also prepare you to succeed in having a good life. Hrabowski, being the president of the University of Maryland, believes everyone should have the opportunity to receive a higher education. The diversity is an asset as it produces opportunities for anyone to partake in higher education, but it can also overwhelm or overcomplicate the selection process. Because of this, people should carefully look at expenses, estimated net costs, and anticipated financial aid (Hrabowski 260). This research will better prepare the person to face the dreaded thought of student debt and to smoothen the lengthy process of receiving the education.
Hrabowski urges that colleges and universities provide detailed costs and potential financial aid. Hrabowski believes a laid out and detailed summary of the cost of the institution should be made available to the student and his/her family. He also urges that financial aid packages, graduation rates and students’ debt upon graduation should be supplied to students and families (Hrabowski 260).
