I made the choice to attend college and make an impact in my life and the lives of others. After I graduated high school I had no intentions of pursuing a college degree, considering my parents never attended college and I didn’t find it essential that I should leave the ranch in the pursuit of a higher education. I honestly didn’t have a whole lot of confidence in myself, never thought I could begin to attempt work, school and paying off my students loans. Nevertheless, I was presented the opportunity to Livestock Judge on a scholarship that could cover nearly half of my tuition at NJC. So with my parents seeing this as an opportunity for me to quit, I fought even harder to find a way to cover my school bill. In the spring started to join more clubs and became a student ambassador, I also joined choir, crossroads and tried be involved in as many campus events as humanly possible. In the spring I was selected along with one other student to receive the Rising Star Award. I finally felt like I was making progress, regardless of the fact that I still had no idea how to pay for my next year of school. This all changed the day my boss in the Admissions Office gave me the idea to run for Student Government. I knew it would be a challenge to campaign for this position which is selected by the student body. Despite this, I knew that this was exactly the opportunity I needed if I wanted to stay in school. Being one of the three members of Student Government covered your room and board cost as well as your meal plan. So with a little bit of hard work and determination I studied for the test on the student by-laws, I hung flyers throughout campus, and I delivered the best speech I could conjure up, in hopes that I could land the position as Vice President of the student body.
