The suburb of Pyrmont on the shores of Sydney Harbour has been transformed by the processes of urban renewal into a thriving cosmopolitan residential area, an efficient and sophisticated business centre, and a popular recreational and tourist hub. Through my own observation of the Pyrmont area, I have seen how the painstaking urban planning efforts for the area have come to fruition, and a focal point of the Harbour foreshore created as a result of this.
The whole island is in the shape of a giant square with white sandy beaches full of people sunbathing, swimming and fishing right on the shoreline. From the end of the hot pavement parking lot to shore of the beach is an ocean of soft white sand. The pearlescent white sand seems to know how to invade every nook and cranny almost as if it enjoys it. Walking around the beach on the fluffy whiteness surrounding the parking lot, the seagulls are fighting over scraps of food on the ground. “Sandy beach ecosystems provide invaluable services to humankind. Their functions have been exploited through history, with significant anthropogenic effects (Lucrezi, 2015)”. This white sandy beach is a beautiful refuge from the mundane grind of everyday life. The smell of the misty ocean air mixed with the sound of seagulls hovering above and kids playing is a tonic for the mind. The feel of the sand between their toes and the waves crashing over them as people swim in the water, or the jerk of a fishing pole when someone is catching a fish makes Fred Howard Park one of the best places to relax. Standing on the beach looking out on the water, people are kayaking and windsurfing. The lifeguards watching vigilantly in their bright red shirt and shorts, blowing their whistles when they see someone being unsafe. After a long day of swimming and laying around visitors head back over the soft white sand to the showers, in order to rinse off the menacing sand that clings to everything like a bad habit. Everyone rushes over the hot pavement burning their feet to reach their cars so they can put away their beach paraphernalia which is still covered in the white sand, nearly impossible to completely leave behind, so when they get home it serves as a reminder of where they were that
Australian films are usually criticised for their poor cinematography, weak storyline and terrible stereotypical actors. However, this is not the case for the superb all age 2011 film entitled ‘Red Dog’. Based on the true Australian legend, Red Dog is loved by many Australians; he roamed the outback in search for his owner John. This emotional movie amazed the whole of Australia, finding his way into the hearts of everyone he meets. The film portrays a positive picture of Australia’s national identity as many of the landscapes and Australian spirit can still be found across Australia nowadays, which is why Red Dog should enter the ‘Cannes Film Festival’. The portrayal of the setting, characters and language have all played
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
I have read three texts this year which share a common theme. In all the texts there is a group that experiences bad luck and develops their friendship. In the novel "The Cay" by Theodore Taylor has a main character who has bad luck.

One main idea of this book was that with the right mindset anything is possible. This is proven in the book when Louie is in the concentration camp and has to hold up a large piece of wood while having the Japanese guards stare at him. This shows that he had the mindset that he could outlast the guards and that he could overcome any obstacles in life.

David Almond explores the theme of imagination throughout his novel Skellig. From the first sentence to the very last, the theme of imagination was expressed through subplots and ideas. Questions and theories arose when Michael discovered Skellig in his garage. There were many situations throughout the novel where the reader has to think, ‘can this situation get better? do I believe that it can get better?’ David Almond activates the readers mind further by adding in winged creatures, both real and mythological, this allows each readers imagination to experience different thoughts about each activity in the novel. David Almond ties in belief and disbelief into the theme of imagination, complemented with excellent imagery, to create a vivid picture of the story in the readers mind. The story relates to David Almond more than most readers know. He had an ill sister when he was a child and Michael’s new house is very similar to the house that David Almond bought, right down to the toilet in the dining room.
Macondo is constantly being subjected to outside forces which cultivates and imposes change to happen within the village. The changes range from military, economic, and religious. These invasions help move the reader along a linear time line. The town of Macondo seems to be regarded as its own character. As outsiders arrive and influence the townspeople, it affects Macondo as a whole, which shapes the way it is viewed and how it interacts with other characters. Even though these invasions allow the reader to experience the plot in a linear fashion, they repeatedly show that the townspeople are powerless, which is a recurring theme. The constant state of powerlessness functions to show that the townspeople do not contribute towards the development of the town. Therefore, the linear plot of Macondo, as a character, is separate from the plot of the

Few objects could claim to elicit such varied responses as the stone statue of Coatlicue. Found in 1790 in the former Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, the object depicted the ancient mother goddess of childbirth and warfare. Nahuatl for “Serpent Skirt,” Coatlicue wears a skirt weaved of snakes. However, that is not the only place on the statue that features the serpent motif. In fact, her head itself is removed, giving way to two spouts of blood that are represented as snakes. Serpents are known to be sacred in Mesoamerican culture, and they are often associated with water and fertility. Other animal parts include the claws on her feet while her hands are blades, ready to pierce through bodies. While this corresponds to the human skull, hearts,
From the very first sentence of David Almond’s enchanting novel, Skellig, the reader is addicted to the mystery behind the unknown presence in the garage of 10-year-old Michael’s new home on Falconer Road. Almond’s character Skellig is portrayed to be rude and mysterious through dialogue and his bird-like or angelic qualities are demonstrated through both characterisation and imagery in the descriptions of Skellig’s appetite and appearance. The character of Skellig is revealed to the reader by using the mentioned
