The Disinformation Nation Propaganda is a multifaceted term that’s unfortunately been given negative connotations. It is an ancient idea that has existed since ancient times. Propaganda is used in wartime in order to garner support for the military and demoralize enemy troops. In times of peace propaganda is used to shape public opinion in many various ways, by dictators in order to stop revolts and keep power, and even in democracy in order to create cultural revolutions. Propaganda is not solely a tool for oppressing the public, starting revolts, or even supporting the public, it is simply a set of tools that is used to propagate and spread ideas throughout the population. It’s the signs on people’s lawns, the commercials and billboards you see. It’s so commonplace that it’s rarely considered propaganda, but it’s still a media attempt to change public opinion. Another form of peacetime propaganda is simply the promotion of certain government agencies. For example, having the National Park Service show off some of the beautiful wilderness sights that they’ve preserved in order to raise funds. It served as a glimpse into the life of slaves that most northerners never had, and it served a powerful purpose as it, and the play based on it, helped unify the North against slavery. In fact it was so effective that the South banned the book, and hanged those who had it. Similar propagandist media has been used by the the Prohibition Abolitionists, Anti-Vietnam protesters, and even by members of the KKK.
