The Cold War Era was created because of disagreements over differing ideologies that eventually caused divisions and tensions that shaped the modern world. During the Cold War era, many nations become influenced by communism and eventually adopted the Marxist ideology, while others remained capitalist. During the 44-year period of the Cold War, the communist and capitalist nations grew suspicious of one another which created constant tension. Nations like the Soviet Union, helped spread its sphere of communist influence to countries that wanted to become communist. As well, capitalist nations like the United States helped contain communism from spreading out of the Soviet Union into other anti-communist countries. The effect of the Cold War caused separation in Europe and in Korea. The separation was called the Iron curtain in Europe, and separated Western Europe, the capitalists, from Eastern Europe, the communists. After the Yalta and Potsdam conferences, it became clear that strong disagreements had been developed between the U.S. and Soviet Union on the future of eastern Europe and the occupation of Germany. Stalin wanted to organize communist governments in the eastern European states and the U.S. wanted to eastern European states to have democratic governments to create friendly relations with U.S. Eventually, the U.S. cut off the Lend-Lease Program and refused to make loans to the USSR. The first alliance created was called NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the members consisted of North America and Western Europe. The alliance’s ultimate purpose was the eventual integration of national armed forces of the member nations into a unified military command. Another alliance that was created was SEATO, the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. The U.S. organized this alliance to support anti-Communist nations in Asia, while the string of the SAC air bases surrounding the Soviet Union (Hill 315). In 1955 the Soviet Union created an alliance called the Warsaw Pact, that included all of Eastern Europe and was built off the Soviet fears of a remilitarized Germany that could potentially invade Russia, like in World War II. The purpose of the alliance was a competing military alliance system that integrated the armed forces of Eastern Europe into a unified force under Soviet control (Hill 315). The final alliance created during the Cold War was the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance. The purpose of this alliance provided Mao, leader of the CCP in China, with Stalin’s tens of thousands of Soviet military and civilian experts to help China modernize its armed forces, infrastructure and industries (Hill 315).
