LEADERSHIP STYLES: A TALE OF TWO COACHES
The paper will compare and contrast two styles of leadership. It will discuss the different styles with examples of the success of these styles. The two styles will be examined for both the positive effects and negative effects on those under both leadership styles. It will show two different outcomes and the effectiveness of both leadership styles.
The first Coach, coach Knight has a very strong personality and belief. He has a “passionate and demanding leadership style.” (Snook S. , 2005). This is a man whom from early childhood had the desire and will to “win”. His grandmother’s strategy was to allow her grandson to win. Coach Knight passion was that “Hard work and preparation it took to win”

Coach K was a totally different type of leader than Coach Knight, and yet he received as many if not more accolades than Coach Knight. What made him different ? Coach K was given two opportunities of growth as a new coach by coach Knight. If one thing could be said, it was he took the best of Coach Knight’s theory, he replaced the fear with family. He had a simple message to greet his team “We only have one rule here. Don’t do anything that detrimental to yourself. Because if it’s detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program and to Duke University” (Snook S. P., 2005, p. 3). He felt a leadership “is ongoing, adjustable flexible and dynamic” (Snook S. P., 2005, p. 3).
Coach K was very successful with his players and had positive relationships with his players. He liked to get to know his players, get inside their heads and view them eye to eye when speaking to them. He also expected them to do this in their dealing with each other. He was very family orientated and dealt with his team like they were family. He did not want “ fear to be my primary motivator” (Snook S. P., 2005, p. 5). It was this feeling of “family” that enabled him to look at a lucrative job offer, and make the decision to stay in his current position. Home is where the heart
...de four trips to the Final Four and won three National Championships. The only other active coach with three National Championships is his former Army assistant, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, who may end up surpassing Knight's win total for a new record. While Knight has not yet matched this success at Texas Tech, he is already making a case for himself as the school's best coach ever.
Bobby Knight’s college basketball career goes back over 40 years. In 1960 as a player for Ohio State University, Knight helped the Buckeyes capture the national championship. This feat will later make Knight one of only two men to play on and coach a national championship team in college basketball, the other being Dean Smith. Knight’s Ohio State Buckeye teams went on to win two more Big Ten championships in the next two years. Knight’s fellow teammates can remember him as being a tenacious defender on the court who would stop at nothing to win a game. His competitive nature allowed him to continue his basketball career after his playing years were over.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
In the following essay, I will argue that Herbert “Herb” Brooks was a charismatic leader due to his powerful motivation and his high expectations. He expected great things from the players he coached, but mostly, he expected them to think of the team and not themselves. He motivated with a powerful punch, mostly through fear, but was able to unite his teams and eventually the country.
Finally, Coach K will continue to teach about life and leadership. He believes that your personal signature should be on everything you do; that you should be proud of your performance. People love winners and they love a good Cinderella story. Like Cinderella the results came from being committed, discipline, honest, and respectful. This is Coach K’s winning philosophy.
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
Throughout the book “Leading with the Heart,” I read about prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and situational leadership. He recommended that leaders begin with the trait theory when beginning the selection process when starting his or her organization. In chapter one and as well as chapter two, Coach K refers to coachable players. Meaning, players or members that do not mind being taught and learning; willing to take a back seat to someone else in charge. Establish right away in the first meeting the only rule for the team: “Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if it is detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program (Krzyzewski, 2000, p.4). He reiterates that leaders must be very selective in this process, because the people you select represent you as the leader, and your company. In some cases leaders must sacrifice some skill and talent for people who have outstanding character. “Character and respect will outlast talent when talent can’t see past themselves.” Krzyzewski mentions that he will sign a kid who has the character of a leader and train them to gain the skill necessary down the road. I believe that this is why the Duke Men’s basketball program is very successful because he picks
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Additionally, he was forced to demonstrate his toughness twice more on the first day of practice by telling the temporary coach, “Secondly, your days of coaching are over,” and then by standing up to the group of men after he dismissed Buddy from the team. These actions made no friends of the men; however, th...
This autocratic style was appropriately assigned to Coach Boone because he demanded obedience and respect as the head coach of the football team, and as a black man living in a racially tense community. By using the autocratic leadership style he was able to overcome the racial obstacles with perseverance, and motivate the team. These actions in turn led to them being highly successful. At first, Boone’s coaching style seemed to have a negative impact on a team that did not work together. However, over time it proved to not only bring the team together but it also made the players into better people, both on and off the field.

Jeff Janssen and Greg Dale are peak performance coaching, they are highly credible and respected in the field of coaching. The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches explains a new style of coaching. Jeff and Greg talk with a bunch of current and former successful coaches to develop this new style of coaching. Coaching in the past has been fear and intimidating focused. The style they discovered is credible coaching, no longer centered on fear and intimidating but focused around trust and relationships. Credible coaching allows one to get the most out of their athletes while still being respected as the coach. Coach Krzyzewski was one the the coaches interviewed and he hit the nail into the coffin when he said,"Coaching is about relationships. It goes way beyond X’s and O's. You have to create an environment of trust among your staff and athletes. Without trust, you have nothing. If you do have trust, you will be able to accomplish great things."
A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). The philosophy should also contain written documents of implemented strategies and techniques, so that the coach will know what to improve upon season by season
Coach Herman Boone, who is played by Denzel Washington, is a very influential person. He is a perfect leader. While it cannot be found out for sure, Coach Boone can be classified under the trait theory of management, that “Leaders are Born”. The type of leadership he displays cannot be taught, he is able to bring together two different types of groups to act as one, to respect each other and play together. He shows power in the movie, he has a large capacity to influence others. Using his power, he gets the players to conform and forget how others think they are supposed to act towards each other. The goal specificity is also clear in the movie. Coach Boone expects his team to be ‘perfect’, he expects them to win the Virginia State Championship. Former head coach and now assistant coach Bill Yoast, played by Will Patton, is also a very influential person and good leader. He is in charge...
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.
