Clothing was a very big part of the Renaissance. The wealthy had lots of clothes but, the peasants had one or two sets of clothes. The shapes and sizes of clothes changed. The wealthier men wore colorful tights or stockings. Over the tights, they wore a shirt and coat. They wore hats as well. Poorer men wore less colorful clothes and they did not wear hats.Women wore high waisted dresses and puffy shoulders and sleeves. Richer women had jewelry that was made of gold. Hairstyles came and went with men. At times, men who had long hair and shaven faces were popular. At other times, short hair and pointy beards were in style. Women thought blonde hair was beautiful. During the sixteenth century, fashion was revolutionary, especially Elizabethan and Italian fashion. Much of the Elizabethan and Italian fashion was influenced by dress that came from other places of the world, but they modified the costume to fit their own style and desires. What people wore back in that era was based upon social class. The wealthy people and ones given a title wore luxurious clothing during this time period. Cheaper and lesser quality dress was worn by those of a lower class. Distinguishing who a person was and what class they came from was made easy by the Sumptuary Laws. These Laws ensured that no one could be mistaken for the wrong class. No choice was given to people; they wore what defined them. Although there were laws to regulate what people wore, Elizabethan and Italian fashion remained sensational.

Many people would not believe that there are so many similarities between modern day fashion and the fashion of the renaissance time period. Many differences may be seen between the two, but the similarities are remarkable. Throughout all of time, clothing has been the major representation of social classes. What people wear has always been the distinguishing factor between the wealthy and the poor classes of both the renaissance and current time period. The evolution from time period to time period has been vast, but the fact that what people wear represents what class they reside in is still very prevalent. The Renaissance time period took place during the 14th and the 16th centuries it began in Europe. The Renaissance was a time of art, open ideas, and new beginnings. Before this time there was the Middle Ages. Then it was not a good time at all, it was full of sickness, disease, death, and the plague it killed almost half of Europe’s population. After the plague slowly decreased the population in Europe started to grow. Lots of new things started to happen. Like Bankers Merchants, and Tradespeople had a new market for their services. People became wealthier and had more money to spend. People began to build much bigger houses and buy more expensive clothes and people became more interested in the art and liturature. People began to learn foreign languages, they read more, played instruments, and finding more that interested them.
