Recommended: The Modernist Movement
Occurring out of the rebellious mood at the beginning of the twentieth century, modernism was a radical approach that desired to revive the way modern civilization viewed life, art, politics, and science. Modernist wants to reject the current European culture. For the Establishment, the result would be catastrophic; the new emerging culture would undermine tradition and authority in the hopes of transforming contemporary society. Modernism rejected all religious and moral principles. They felt that the rules of conduct were restrictive and a limiting force over the human spirit.
One of the causes for this desire to change was the fact that technology was rapidly re-inventing societies, with many discoveries and innovations taking place. This put pressure on culture to re-define itself in order to keep pace with modernity. Artists questioned academic art for its lack of

(756) He explains that modernism takes elements of art and focuses on those elements, one of the most important being emotional or specific experience ( ). Every piece of art produces a different emotion and this emotion is called the aesthetic emotion. Bell continues by stating that he is not interested in the quality of the art piece but the emotions that come from it ( ). If art is not a constant source of passionate emotion, than it has no reason for being.
Greenberg describes the essence of modernism as the use of characteristic methods of a discipline to criticize the discipline itself (754). It is not negative but rather, reflective. Greenberg states that in order for art to be “pure” it has to demonstrate exclusivity to itself. It has to justify itself by providing an experience that no other art can (754).
One of the most important characteristics of modernism is its uniqueness to pictorial art (756). Modernism’s flatness is noticed before the art content (756). It focuses on opticality by abandoning 3D space
Modernism indicates a branch of movements in art (Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism; Cubism; Expressionism; Dada, Surrealism, Pop Art. Etc.) with distinct characteristics, it firmly rejects its classical precedent and classical style, what Walter Benjamin would refer to as “destructive liquidation of the traditional value of the cultural heritage”; and it explores the etiology of a present historical situation and of its attendant forms of self-consciousness in the West. Whereas Modernity is often used as ...
This time period was a time for the breaking of traditions. “The arts were now beginning to break all of the rules since they were trying to keep pace with all of the theoretical and technological advances that were changing the whole structure of life.” (History of Modernism). This era was the death of
Modernism represents those who felt that old forms were becoming outdated in the new age of the industrialised world – characteristic of modernism is the experimentation with form, and the idea of rejecting realism. (Wikipedia

Considering how to define Modernism and PostModernism required looking at how worldviews today play a large part of our perspectives towards society, culture and religion. Modernism is a sociological movement that began in the last decade of the 19th century and first decades of the 20th century that rejected the customary or traditional worldview to a new and improved way by asserting a shift in power and authority into the providence of leaders in politics and universities and away from the church.
Modernism is the term of deviating from the norm. In the early 1900s, modernism influenced women’s role in society by providing more opportunities, jobs, and role models for girls today, in society.
Avant-garde is a term referred to works or concepts that are experimental and 'cutting-edge' concepts (Avant-garde:2014). In the purpose of this study, Cezanné was part of early 20th-century art world’s avant-garde known as Impressionism. Clement Greenberg (1909: 755), identifies Kant as the first philosopher to describe Modernism as a self-critical tendency as he was the first to criticize criticism in itself. A modernist is said to be seen as a kind of critic, who criticizes according to a specific set of values and ideas about the development of art, thus a modernist is not necessarily seen as a kind of artist (Harrison 1996:147).According to Greenberg, Modernism self-criticizes itself differently when compared to the Enlightenment as the Enlightenment criticizes from the outside whereas Modernism does so from the inside (Greenberg 1909:755).
The term “modern” makes people think of words like bold and captivating. Literary modernism is just that. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, poets and writers steered away from the traditional styles of literature and moved towards expressing the true sensibilities of their time. Some writers that followed this trend are Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and T.S. Eliot. The techniques that these outstanding literary buffs used were rejection of traditional themes, subjects, and forms; bold experimentation in style and form reflecting fragmentation of society; sense of disillusionment and loss of faith in the American Dream; rejection of sentimentality; rejection of the ideal hero and instead using the flawed hero; interest in the workings of the human mind; and revolt against the spiritual debasement of the modern world. Many early authors, like the ones mentioned above, used these techniques to contribute to a unique American voice.
The modernist style of writing is one of disillusionment, frustration and loss of hope. The modernist writers did not try to point out silver linings or brighter futures, instead they explored the depths of the sorrows of life in the time of the great depression and the long road to recovery from it. Most of these writers blamed the modernization of America for the stock market crash that brought on the great depression. Likewise, modern politics drew America into not only one, but two world wars. At the same time, modern intellectual advancements challenged or usurped traditional beliefs and values.
Modernism can be defined through the literary works of early independent 20th century writers. Modernism is exp...
Modernism is a period which is both progressive and optimistic. The Modern period starts with the Renaissance for historians. It’s stem ‘’Modern’’, comes from the Latin which means ‘’current’’.It is a cultural movement which involves changes in art, architecture, music and literature:
This essay aims to explore the contextual ideas behind the modern movement, how it influenced today’s artists and thinkers, and how ‘Modernization, Modernity, Modernism’ shaped the world we live in. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, around 1860 after man had considerably conquered the machine, a new reality became prevalent in the lives of the newly industrialised world. Modernism includes more than just art and literature. By now it includes almost the whole of what is truly alive in our culture”(Greenberg 1982:5). This quote can be applied to the earlier days of modernism when jobs had changed from agricultural based employment to corporate and menial based labour.
Modernists did not have faith in the external reality put forth by social institutions, such as the government and religion, and they no longer considered these avenues as trustworthy means to discover the meaning of life. For this reason they turned within themselves to discover the answers. Modernist literature is centered on the psychological experience as opposed to the external realities of the world. The experience is moved inwards in an attempt to make modernist works more representative of reality by making the experience more personal. The modernist era of literature is closely associated with the works of T.S. Eliot, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, among others. These three authors stand out because they have made use of unique literary tactics and devices which emphasize the inward turn of modernist literature.
Modernism is all about individualism and breaking from the customary forms in literature ("The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The 20th Century: Topic 2: Overview." The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The 20th Century: Topic 2: Overview. N.p., n.d. Web. The Web. The Web.
Many believed that Modernist works were not “art” because they did not always look like real life. But what is “real life”? A new outlook on reality was taken by Modernists. What is true for one person at one time is not true for another person at a different time. Experimentation with perspective and truth was not confined to the canvas; it influenced literary circles as well.
