Clinical Information System A clinical information system, CIS, is widely used in the healthcare field. These systems have a variety of uses, and they aid in facilitating the practices in the healthcare profession greatly. A clinical information system, defined, is a system that is computer based and designed to collect, store, manipulate, and make readily available important clinical information, with an example being electronic medical records (Clinical Information Systems). Patients may have multiple doctors, or they may seek multiple opinions regarding their conditions, so sharing patient records is a necessity. There are three main types of clinical information that are essential to accurately diagnosing and treating patients, so individual providers and care teams must have access to the health records, quickly changing medical-evidence base, and provider orders for patient care (Reid). With the ability to readily access this information and share this information between providers, patients can have treatment plans that effectively encompass all aspects of their condition and allows them to have a tailored treatment plan to fulfill their needs and …show more content…

Patients are able to communicate with their healthcare providers and their healthcare providers are able to communicate with each other. The information that both patients and providers have access allows them to be aware of medication lists, medical history, current diagnoses, and diagnosis testing. All parties are able to ensure that this data is up to date and accurate, and this allows new diagnoses to be accurate and treatment to be effective. There is opportunity in using big data to gather information from the data pool to help make significantly more accurate decisions and diagnoses, however this is also a challenge because the data pool can only allow for the accuracy based on the information it has access
