In 1862, Claude Debussy was born as the oldest of five children of his parents, Manuel-Achille and Victorine Debussy. Although his family garnered a rather meager income, due to his piano skills, and the sponsorship of a wealthy millionariess he joined the Paris Conservatory at age eleven. Later, upon received scholarship from musical competition, he studied at the Villa Medici the music of German composer Richard Wagner, whose influence with Debussy lasted.
