Some work as rescuers, businessmen, consultants, a student, doctors, or even garbage men. No matter where an individual works, they will always encounter three types of workers: Hard-Workers, Slackers, and Mediocres. The Hardworking people have several superb characteristics. So instead a person has to work a usual nine to five just to put food on the table for their families, and in many cases that is not even enough. In the article, “Why We Work” by Andrew Curry, Curry examines the complexities of work and touches on the reasons why many workers feel unsatisfied with their jobs. Work is a word that one hears on a daily basis on multiple different levels; work out, work at school, go to work, work at home, work for change. Society today is made of people that work hard every moment of their day from sunrise to twilight, these workers work for food, housing, family, education, and transportation. Essentially in today’s world if one wants something they must work for it, gone are the days where handouts are common and charity is given freely. The question then arises, who speaks for these voiceless workers that are often working so hard they have no time to voice an opposition? When workers work overtime, they display a high degree of commitment to the task at hand and are thus usually compensated for the extra hours they put in. However, this is only possible when there is mutual respect between the employees and employers. An employer who is negligent of the effort a worker puts in his/her work creates job dissatisfaction and distance in the workplace. Beth Shulman in her work The Betrayal of Work, introduces the pharmacy technical assistant, Judy Smithfield. Her job requires accuracy and scrutiny, which is often very time consuming. Without sufficient help, she finds herself working six days a week. Logically, considering the difficulty of her task, reasonable compensation, respect and appreciation should follow. Currently, human beings are thinking more on the line of they need work in order to make a living. For that reason, work has become meaningless, disagreeable, and unnatural. Many view work as a way to obtain money and not a meaningful human activity that one does for themselves. The author states that there are two reactions of the alienated and profoundly unsatisfactory character of the modern industrial work. One being the ideal of complete laziness and the other, hostility towards work. Fromm believes the reason why people have animosity regarding work is due to their unconscious mind. Subconsciously, a person has “a deep-seated, hostility towards work and all that is connected to it” says Fromm. I believe what Fromm is saying to be true, after all I witness it everyday. During the Gilded Age activists tried improving the conditions of workers and the poor in many ways. In a few ways they were moderately successful but mostly philanthropists didn’t succeed. Between 1875 and 1900 the organized labor, overall, didn’t improve the position of the workers, making them unsuccessful.
Another characteristic of bureaucratic organization that compromises efficiency is the division of specialized labor. When all the tasks are specialized and everyone is trained to do one specific thing, there is no allowance for free riding. If one person, or many people for that matter, decides to slack off (which is simply human nature), what then happens?
Labor unions have been in America for a very long time. There are many unions in a myriad of different fields. Labor unions were and are used to allow for equal treatment of workers. Employers always want to maximize their profits and they try to give the least to get the most in return. For reasons such as this is why unions were formed. Generally a union boss is appointed or hired to protect the rights and privileges of the employees. The union boss is generally very representative of the demographics of the workers. The leader of the employees needs to know what they want and what is fair for them and this is why he tends to represent one type of work force, such as the teachers union. This type of representation is made easier when most of the workers come from the same background. Background meaning family size, education, race, etc. Labor unions have helped shape the American work force, as have the backgrounds of the men and women who have worked in them. America was founded on diversity and the freedom to choose. Many different backgrounds have found their way into America and labor unions. As stated earlier, labor unions have people of the same background in them. America’s first settlers were generally of the same background and because of that, so were the members of the first labor unions. As the United States expanded so did the work force and the diversity in it. Diversity and understanding the challenges and benefits is what enables America to be great. In the pages of this paper we are going to look at the change in the make-up of labor unions by the entrance of African-Americans and how they have influenced America and the labor unions for the better. When the U.S. is compared to the conditions of other workers in other countries the numbers come as quite a shock. According to the magazine Psychology Today, “The United States—one of the richest countries in the world--ranks 28th among advanced nations in the category of work-life balance, 9th from the bottom” (Cummins 1). This stressful imbalance of home life with excessive work hours has left us in desperate need of more time and is becoming a strong identifier of American culture in the world. The opponents of the use of labor unions for collective bargaining in today’s workplace argue that the irrelevance of these organizations is demonstrated n the recent steady decline of the rate of unionization. One of the main arguments used to show that labor unions are outdated impediments to progress is the ever increasing managerial hostility and attitudes towards unions. This hostility and attitude is a by-product of negativity as well as other factors or a consequence of combination of factors. Managers have continued to show their negativity towards labor unions because of differences in market composition and structures, changes in labor laws, organization size, differences in public policies, union philosophies, and the impacts of unions on wages (Campolieti, Gomez & Gunderson, 2013, p.100).
Throughout American history, labor unions have served to facilitate mediation between workers and employers. Workers seek to negotiate with employers for more control over their labor and its fruits. “A labor union can best be defined as an organization that exists for the purpose of representing its members to their employers regarding wages and terms and conditions of employment” (Hunter). Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. Despite these goals, the early years of union formation were characterized by difficulties (Hunter).
What would it be like to be forced to work long hours for little pay? What feelings would you have after being treated horribly at your workplace? Many workers had to face hardship while working in the factories of 19th century Europe. This was caused by careless government and factory owners. The workers had terrible lives because of low wages and inability to advance in social class. According to an article written by Louise Curth, ”In many cases, the factory owners tended to consider their employees as little more than commodities. The men, women, and children who filled those roles were generally subjected to long hours, low wages, and poor working conditions”. This shows how the factory owners treated their workers. The factory owners thought of the workers as an item rather than an actual human. This caused workers to become very upset with these factory owners.
In bad jobs, you can easily be fired and you receive few benefits and chance for promotions are few. Good jobs require higher levels of education and they pay really well and the environment is also really good. The good jobs are not closely supervised and they encourage worker to put their ideas. The good jobs offer secure employment, benefits and lots of opportunities for promotion. In good jobs, if you are working in one company more than one year, the company will give you two weeks of paid vacation. With good jobs, the company gives you security. Most of the jabs fell into bad jobs are good jobs. According to the book, bad jobs are often called “dead-end”. People also do the full and part time jobs, even if those jobs are in a good or bad category. Some part-times have good jobs and bad jobs. In part-time bad jobs, you face of low pay, lack of job security and no outlet for creativity. In the book, it says that McDonald’s employee interviewed by one sociologist, “this isn’t really a job…. The employee and employer identify and rework tasks and hours in order to increase employees’ job satisfaction. Correspondingly, this job crafting entail drawbacks. Drawbacks such as; erosion of focus, as well as inefficiency in the workplace. Crafting new tasks can erode the focus of the task; likewise, key elements may be eliminated. The workplace can become inefficient as employees may not be available when needed to complete crucial tasks. This can also have a negative impact of the productivity of the company. In essence, if employees are trying to juggle multiple tasks at once, other important tasks will be affected because one person can only do so much at a time.
