Peaceful Resistance in Society Civil disobedience to laws is a method of protest that has always been prevalent in free societies and has the power to change the viewpoints of many and bring about change. Peaceful resistance to laws, and whether or not it is a positive or negative method to change, is not black and white or easily determined to be right or wrong. Instead, there are many complications and factors that go into determining the true motives of these movements. However, most of the time, civil disobedience positively impacts societies as it brings issues to the forefront of the media and thusly to the public and aids in battling inequality and fighting for justice. In the past, peaceful resistance has been beneficial and contributed to societal changes in the United States. One of the biggest examples being the Civil Rights Movement. For example, Rosa Parks refused to follow …show more content…
Many people stood up with Native Americans and fought for their right to keep their sacred grounds and resist the Dakota Access Pipeline. While the people peacefully protested, the police ordered the protest to disperse and when the protesters did not, people began to be arrested as well as tear-gassed and attacked with aggressive force. The protesters fought the law and did not comply with the police, and as a result of their actions, the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline became popular on social media and received extensive coverage on the news. Regularly, these situations would be pushed under other news stories and issues that most people would find “more interesting”, but the protesters’ relentless resistance brought light to the situation. Eventually, the Dakota Access Pipeline was rejected by President Barack Obama. Resisting the police and their orders is illegal, but can bring around change if it is for the greater

In Chavez's argument, he explained the importance of nonviolence during the Civil Rights Movement. He used Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s movement as an example of successful protest using nonviolence. Although Dr. King's example proved to be effective, after he died, several members of the movement resorted to violence which caused the death of thousands of Americans. Chavez argued nonviolence is the only way to protest violence in order to attract support for his cause: the farm workers' movement. Chavez's rhetorical choices, through his tone and allusion to history, effectively influenced farmers to protest without violence.
Civil rights are the rights to personal liberty and are provided by the law. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights promises everybody civil rights. But many people, including lots of black people, have been denied their civil rights. Black people, and also some white people who help them, have struggled for these rights for a long time. Many people have helped and many kinds of groups have been formed to help win equal rights for everyone. Things are a lot better used to be, but the struggle is not over.
Protesters and activists have worked desperately to delay construction of the pipeline, demanding that it be rerouted away from Native lands. Although the protesters thus far have been nonviolent, law enforcement has not demonstrated the same decency. The film Red Power: Standing Rock Part II. Red Power: Standing Rock Part II shows how the
The vast majority of uprisings by the oppressed against their persecutor end in blood shed and great human suffering. If we lived in a utopia everyone would adopt passive resistance to escape persecution, but we do not live in a utopia and everyone cannot adopt passive resistance. Mahatma Gandhi popularized and defined the concept as an alternative to brute-force as a means of resistance. During the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. utilized passive resistance in order to fight back against discrimination against African Americans. Viktor Frankl, in his book Man’s Search for Meaning, writes about the effectiveness of passive resistance, while George Orwell, in his essay Reflections on Gandhi, condemns it. Although, in theory the
In the course of history, the civil rights of individuals have often been violated and reaffirmed. Documents such as the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights specifically sought out the inclusion of others, limitation of ruling powers, and the restitution of liberty in society and in the human spirit. When the People's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is violated most impetuously, it is the common principle and moral duty of that People to reverse the aforementioned violation and revert back to rightful autonomy. To do this, many activists turn to civil disobedience. The issue of civil disobedience attracts two crowds of society who debate whether or not peaceful resistance impacts a society in a positive or negative
applies the principles of civil disobedience in his procedure of a nonviolent campaign. According to him, “In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self-purification; and direct action” (King 262). The first step, which is “collection of the facts,” clarify whether the matter requires civil disobedience from the society (King 262). The second step, “negotiation,” is the step where civil disobedience is practiced in a formal way; to change an unjust law, both sides come to an agreement that respects each other’s demand, (King 262). Should the second step fail, comes the “self-purification,” in which the nonconformists question their willingness to endure the consequences without any retaliation that follow enactment of civil disobedience (King 262). The fourth and the last step, “direct action,” is to execute it; coordinated actions such as protests or strikes to pressure no one, but the inexpedient government to conform to them, and advocate their movement, and thus persuade others to promote the same belief (King 262). This procedure along with principles of civil disobedience is one justifiable campaign that systematically attains its objective. King not only presents, but inspires one of the most peaceful ways to void unjust
The author dismisses civil disobedience as a “guerilla warfare” tactic used to subvert just law, when in reality, disobedience is the democratic solution to infiltrating historic systems of oppression designed to legally exclude minorities and prevent them from gaining a
As humans are imperfect and irrational, they throughout history have formulated governments to deter and prevent crime, organize communities, and act in the best interest of the ruling group [majority or minority]. Since governments can be irrational and humans are emotional, disobedience to authority has and shall always exist in civilised society. True civil disobedience according to Erich Fromm and Mr. Thoreau is against an irrational authority and the focus of protestation is irreconcilable with oneself. Civil disobedience by citizens is intended to evoke change but is drastically different in methodology depending on the government type. The consequences of civil disobedience in mind, in this essay I hereby advise civil disobedience solely
Many see laws as guiding tenets which must be adhered to in order to preserve society. However, laws are created by people, engendering a sense of uncertainty into every drafted, proposed, and ratified regulation. Although the vast majority of laws serve the good purpose of protecting the people, there are a few which warrant peaceful civil disobedience in order to convey the public’s sentiment to the legislative bodies. Indeed, America’s history has been defined by successful civil disobedience, from the Boston Tea Party to the Civil Rights Movement, and from the Vietnam War protests to today’s LGBTQ and Feminist movements. Civil disobedience takes its place alongside America’s core values of freedom, equality, and sovereignty. Additionally,
The practice of civil disobedience has long been discussed as to whether it inspires true social change, or only creates conflict within society. The peaceful resistance of Martin Luther King Jr. can be used as a primary example supporting the positive effects of civil disobedience. While the morality of his actions against the previous law of segregation can be debated, the positive influence of ending segregation is undeniable (Bill of Rights Institute). However, King’s methods of achieving this change, such as peaceful protesting and marches, should not be confused with the non-peaceful rejection of laws. While riots and violence encourage hate and separation, civil disobedience displays how society could function peacefully without the laws being opposed (Bill of Rights Institute). It is then demonstrated that the peaceful resistance to laws, or civil disobedience, positively impacts a free society.
In y opinion peaceful resistance to laws positively impact a free society because the people got to know what they are dealing with in that they have rights .''When the bus filled up and no seats remained, the driver ordered four African Americans, including Parks, to clear their seats so that a white man could sit down. All but Parks acquiesced.Parks was arrested for her act of civil disobedience and convicted of violating the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation in the South until 1965''.This show that she resented to getting off because that was not a free society that why people should resented to any right that they think it's wrong. another example is ''Security Agency programs that collect vast amounts of information about the telephone calls made by millions of Americans, as well as e-mails and other files of foreign targets and their American connections. For this, some, including my colleague John Cassidy, are hailing him as a hero and a whistle-blower.''This man is a hero even Dow adore say that he is not because he is showing
Peaceful resistance stands up to the government oppression in a given country. Henry David Thoreau states, in Civil Disobedience, "Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient. " The word "expedient" means what is
Peaceful resistance to United States laws is a positive thing most of the time, but it can also very well have a negative impact. It is not right to condone or promote illegal activities, even if the people who commit the crime are willing to face the consequences. Protesting is a tremendous way for people to voice their opinion publicly in our free country. Although, disturbing the peace or taking violent actions can snowball from peaceful protesting.
