My opinion about the film “City Lights” by Charlie Chaplin is that it is a great movie. It is the first time that I watch a silent romantic comedy film, my thought at the beginning of the movie was that it was going to be bored but once the story began my way of see this film was so different in the way how the story connect from the beginning to the end. This film was great how the images black and white, the fast motion scenes, and the orchestra music, give the story a taste of pantomime as an art of body language. Also playing a huge role in the story between the characters, in how Chaplin falls in love with this blind lady and his friend ship with this alcoholic
During the Talladega 500, Cal Naughton Jr., Ricky Bobby's former best friend, pulled ahead of Ricky, allowing him to slingshot around his car and pass Jean Girard. Though Cal and Girard were teammates at Dennit Racing, Cal disregarded this and jeopardized his team's success to aid Ricky in the movie Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. This moment was crucial to Ricky, he having fallen from grace, going from NASCAR's top driver to being let go by Dennit Racing. The love Cal exhibited was a selfless form of love that was centered entirely around Ricky's happiness, not his own. Because of this selflessness, Cal compromised his own agenda, winning for Dennit, and disregarded personal consequence in hopes that Ricky would win the race. If you truly love someone as Cal loved Ricky, you must sometimes compromise your own interests for their benefit.
The movie I was assigned was, In the Heat of the Night starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. This film took place during the late 1960’s in Mississippi, where Virgil Tibbs, a black Philadelphia homicide detective, is traveling. Upon his travel, he unintentionally gets involved in a murder investigation of a business man. He was first accused of committing this murder when a police officer became suspicious of him. After they determined his innocence’s, he was then asked to help solve the case because of his vast knowledge and experience dealing with homicide crimes. He eventually agreed to help because he knew it was the right thing to do. The process for finding the killer was determined to be difficult, but even more so when Tibbs’s efforts
The “Dream Factory” is described as the psychological intersection of the phantasy (dream) and reality (factory). Films represent this combination of the forces of society by posing the difference between phantasy and reality. In the film, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), after a nasty break up, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) has her memory erased of boyfriend Joel Barish (Jim Carrey). After learning of Clementine’s actions, Joel has the same procedure performed at the seemingly low scale medical company, Lacuna. The name Lacuna also means a gap or a missing part, and both Clementine and Joel wish to eliminate each other from their memories. Writer Charlie Kaufman and director Michel Gondry have created a film that exemplifies the human desire to escape reality into phantasy, only to find themselves eternally trapped in their own realities; this showcases the inescapable history through the3 conscious and subconscious according to Lacanian and Althusserian theories.
Moonlight is a motion picture with a tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three chapters in his life as he experiences ecstasy, pain, and the beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality and dealing with his more difficult past. Moonlight describes a touching way of those moments, people and unknown forces that shape our lives and make us the way we are. A major theme of Moonlight is the black male identity and its interactions with sexual identity. The motion picture combines acceptance and love with pain and narrow-mindedness. In it’s simplicity the movie is a chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young black man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
In the film Half the Sky, various filmic elements and cinematic techniques are used to portray the theme women’s oppression, including narratives by the celebrities, the use of close-ups when interviewing the girls in foreign countries, as well as the use of sorrowful background music. In my opinion, overall these filmic elements are not effective to strengthen the film’s message.
In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.
Stereotypes were present in the film in regards to Asians. Jackie Chan, playing Lee, was the first to stand out in the film. In the film, Lee is a martial arts maniac. This is a very common stereotype talked about in the film, The Slanted Screen. The Slanted Screen discussed other stereotypes such as uncultured Asians that speak with foreign accents, restaurant workers and gangsters. These stereotypes were prevalent in the film, Rush Hour. Sang and the Juntao’s men are the perfect example of Asian gangsters in the film. Some of the subservient positions, especially for Asian women in the film featured restaurant workers, Lydia Look as the waitress at Foo Chow and Ai Wan as the hostess at Foo Chow, and the flight attendants played by Christine Ng, Ada Tai and Arlene Tai.
Sunset Boulevard is a hollywood classic film that digs into the aftermath of the sound era caused. Sunset blvd came out on August 10, 1950. The film was directed by Billy Wilder, produced by Charles Brackett, and starred William Holden and Gloria Swanson. Sunset blvd shows us the aftermath of Norma Desmond and how she is stuck in the past of silent hollywood. The darkness and bitterness that many silent movie experienced after they were kicked to the curb once sound came. The film is has a classic dark drama/comedy that is one of the most acclaimed films in film noir history. The film touches on the loneliness and narcissism that silent legends were enduring. The mood of the film is immediately established as decadent and decaying by the narrator of a dead man floating face down in a swimming pool in Beverly Hills.
District 9 is a film that takes us into a realm of a different world from the one that we know now. It combines extraterrestrial life with immense science fiction to illustrate a story we could only imagine to ever actually occur. Although it was created for entertainment purposes, the motion picture can be compared to many different types of individuals and situations. District 9 displays many underlying concepts throughout the movie about racism, prejudice and discrimination. While studying and analyzing the plot and characters, these concepts became more translucent to me, the viewer. This paper will discuss the treatment of District 9 residents and equate their treatment to people with disabilities.
The American dream in my opinion is that anyone in the United States who is a citizen has equal rights when it comes to success, hard work and dedication to something. Everyone has a dream but it's all about how much hard work and effort you put into that dream that determines the outcome of it. In the film clip Friday night lights the team has the dream of beating the other team and being the best of the best. One team mate has a pep talk with the team he said “they bleed just like we do, they went through two a days just like we did they sweat like we do” but we're going to go on that field. King James and his wife Queen Yolanda host this disputation hoping for the conversion of Judaism to Christianity to be easy and simple and recruit Pablo Christiani to represent the christians while Rabbi Moshe is there representing the Jewish. This film shows the constant fight of religions trying to take out the Jewish religion and force a conversion. While they tried it through a disputation they never did stop torturing the Jews and forcefully convert
