Recommended: Immigration in the united states and its effects

In my perspective, serving the military should become a gateway to citizenship, as individuals risk their lives in order to fight for and protect what they consider to be their home country.
Firstly, serving in the military should guarantee legality in the United States, as individuals take the hard decision of putting their life in sake in order to serve the country that has offered them various opportunities. For example, Daniel Torres, an undocumented immigrant who was written about in the Los Ángeles Times article, used a fake identity, which categorized him as a U.S. citizen in order to enroll himself into the Marines. Torres took the risky decision of joining the Marines because he wanted to something for his receiving country. Torres also wanted to prove to those who think otherwise that as an undocumented immigrant he feels thankful for all of the opportunities he has received and is not living in the country to take jobs away from …show more content…

It is understandable that people fear that immigrants will take advantage of the situation, as it has been seen in multiple marriages. To be more specific, there has been instances where undocumented immigrants have married a United States citizen not out of love, but more of a business since becoming a resident grants many benefits. However, that might not be the case, the first thing Oscar Vazquez, main character in the novel, Spare Parts, did when he obtained his U.S. citizenship was to enroll in the military and serve in Afghanistan for a year.
