I think Christopher Columbus transformed the world in a good way. From reading the article, “The Debate Over Columbus,” I gathered a lot of information that helped me come to that conclusion. As I read through the article, many different points of views on the matter of Columbus was shown. Each person brought up a unique perspective of whether or not Columbus should be celebrated. They discussed things like his personality, how important Columbus is to them and other people, and how he can remind us of different things, either historic crimes or reminding us that the past is messy. Each side had a strong argument, but I agree with Columbus transforming the world in a good way.

The way he treated people was dreadful, but now we get a glimpse of how Columbus thought and we get to reflect on Columbus’s wrongdoings and make sure in the present and future, we don’t make or create more issues and we know that treating people the way Columbus did was very disgraceful and rude. So, we can determine what is the correct way of doing things based on what we know about Columbus. History mistakes can be our corrections. The past has many flaws in it, but that is what shapes us into our future. If we can learn more about how Columbus’s thoughts, we can try to fix his errors on how he treated people and use it to guide us to become a better nation and give everyone equal rights. Another reason Christopher Columbus’s experiences are important is that he gives detailed information in his letter. He describes the vegetables, fruit, and things like cotton. Columbus also compared how things were sold for a lower price than he was used to and he saw unfamiliar items. He described the people on the land and their bizarre characteristics and habits. Columbus said, “ They are of very good appearance,” and he’d talked about how young people there were unclothed and he talked about more of their style of living. With him showing how history is messy, can help people cope with their past and realize that a lot of people have flaws and made mistakes. Columbus also sparked our curiosity about the past and made people continue to search deeper into history, so inspiring us to expand our knowledge. He also gave us details about the past, again expanding our knowledge, and he also gave us life lessons when he was very cruel to some people. Our take away from that is to treat everyone with respect. Then lastly, Christopher Columbus wasn’t a nobody. He made it to America, maybe not the person that discovered it, but he still made it there. Columbus most like went through rough storms, people getting sick, but he managed to make it to America and people are glad and proud he was willing to go through all that to get to a Newland.
