Throughout our lives, we will all go through a stressor, whether it be an acute or traumatic stage of stress. For Christian G., his stressor unfortunately became a traumatic stressor. When he was 15, his mother died of an unexpected heart attack. He live alone with his mother, since his parents had divorced when he was 6. He recalls this event to be extremely painful. While talking to him, I noticed that his voice started to break and tears filled his eyes. Christian is now 24, so this event happened a fairly long time ago. He states that what made the event the worst was that he was there when it happened. He recalled that the only thing that kept him going was the thought of his two little brothers. "i gotta do it for them," he stated. That was his motivation to keep going to school and stay focused on what he later plans on becoming, a special agent for the FBI. Christian told me that the stressor's effect lasted for about 3 months. During these 3 months, he felt like not doing anything and "giving up." After the 3 months, he began to cope with it and went back to his regular routine. He describes his mom as a very energetic and life-of-the-party type person. He noticed that everyone felt the loss of his mom, but no one felt it quite like him. Since he basically grew up without a dad, this was his mentor and the person he looked up to, He knew that now his little brothers looked up to him the same way he looked up to his mom, So Christian can get through this tragic incident, he used this negative event and turned it into something he could get motivation off of. "I'm doing it for you mom" is what he would say when he had to study really hard or didn't feel like going to school. "I felt like my mom was watching my every move from above, so i gave her something to be proud about." He explained that if he ever messed up on something or got bad grades in school, he would be disappointing his mom and that was the last thing he wanted. "I wanted to honor my mother's memory." The adjustment process for Christian was very hard, considering he was only 15 when it happened. He had to adjust to living with his grandmother, since his father was in jail. He would have to support his two brothers and help his grandmother a lot, since she was getting old to do lots of stuff. Christian had to balance school and his brothers.
