The Christian church has numerous denominations and evaluation of each can prove to be confusing. Christian denominations share beliefs such as God creating the universe and humankind, Jesus Christ’s human and divine nature, and God’s grace for humankind. With these similarities it becomes difficult to fully understand how denominations differ. While the overarching Christian beliefs are similar, the differences are found in church practices. Church practices vary among denominations. Some are more common such as communal prayer and Bible study. Others are more unique not specifically by denomination but rather by ethnicity. That is when my young mind began developing questions about God, the Apostles, heaven and hell. At this time my only exposure to church was minimal at best. Raised in a non-practicing Catholic household I found the need for answers to my questions were met with resistance and set me on my path for knowledge. In my quest I sought God in the Catholic, Lutheran, Charismatic, and lastly Baptist denominations. It wasn’t until my adult years that I realized how the different church practices varied among denominations. As a teen I recall attending a Baptist church that was so boisterous I don’t recall anything about the practices that occurred during that service. I never imagined that I would attend another Baptist church as an adult. Currently, I attend Crosswind Community Church which is classified as a Filipino Baptist church. While we are more reserved than other Baptists churches we still are considered Baptist. The first difference was that they started promptly at 7:00 pm. Second, they were offering their communion in an open manner during praise and worship. This meant anyone who “felt” the desire to partake of the elements during praise and worship, they simply went up to one of the two communion stations. They would take the elements back to their seats and partake of them during praise and worship. There was a point in the middle of the praise and worship set that was all instrumental and the congregation was encouraged to sing their own unique songs that God had placed on their hearts, to which most did. After praise and worship concluded and before the sermon began, the congregation was encouraged to walk around the sanctuary and introduce themselves to others. In review of announcement slides another difference in practice came to light. Calvary Chapel supported worldwide missions whereas Crosswind Community Church supports only missions in the
