Is the Death Penalty An Issue? The death penalty has been a topic of controversy for the better half of the 21st century. As we as a race have grown and matured, the question has risen as to whether or not we as a society should be given the right to end another man’s life. People debate the economics, moral stances, and legal legitimacy of the death penalty. The death penalty should be allowed, and does not infringe on basic human rights because criminals throw away that right when they murder another willfully. A large argument people take against this topic is the moral legitimacy, which typically takes a Christian stance, however biblically, the death penalty is allowed and called for. Christians believe the Bible says that killing is wrong. However this is a narrow view and not what the Bible teaches. In Genesis chapter 9 verse 6 it is said, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” (Genesis 9:6 ESV) Exodus contains a similar claim, in Exodus chapter 21 in verses 12 through 14 it states, “‘Whoever strikes a man so that he dies shall be put to death. But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. But if a man willfully attacks another to kill him by cunning, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.’” (Exodus 21:12-14 ESV) These are claims from the Old Testament on how to deal with a murderer. The New Testament holds rules about government, the apostle Paul states in the book of Romans, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” (Romans 13:1-2
