My main reason for selecting Wellesley college is the fact that provides an amazing path for women to pursue a higher education providing the necessary tools to have a successful career. I am very interested in the Davis Scholars program particularly since it offers the help to non-traditional students as myself. Understanding the needs that women with family obligations endure while trying to accomplish their dreams of a better future. In my personal experience I have always loved learning and my education was the center of my life but unfortunately that changed when I decided to leave my home country to travel to the United States of America. I had to constantly work many hours and many jobs to survive during those years. I use the word survive
I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.
The historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are fledgling to compete with Predominately White Institutions (PWIs). HBCU were established to serve the educational needs of black Americans. Before HBCU college was create blacks were generally was denied admission to traditionally all white institutions. Since black Americans was prohibited from whites schools HBCUs became the principle means for providing postsecondary education. The greatness of Diablo Valley College is there ability to support and understand the practicality of peoples lives. Growing up in poverty to undocumented parents presents challenges. For this reason, since I was around 7 years old I would help my mother and father work in any way I could. I still remember going to, what seemed to me at the time, as gigantic houses with my mother wondering why the kids there didn’t have to help their mother’s clean houses like me. The idea of socioeconomically privileged cultures ultimately became a topic I learned at a young age and became something that motivates me to succeed still today.
Many factors influenced the fact that I am now attending Louisiana Tech University. Some Micro-sociological forces were present in my decision to come here. My parents who both attended college, were a critical force in my attendance at Louisiana Tech University this fall. My dad obtained an Associate’s degree in business and my mom has a certification in medical coding and 60 hours in college credit. We are a middle-class family so my parents had the ability to help me pay half of the cost of college expenditures that were left. As an alumnus himself, my father’s input helped me in making my decision to attend Louisiana tech by sharing his experience of college life with me. I met Maria in high school through Upward Bound and I would not be a student at the University of Utah today without her support through Student Support Services. Maria has not only supported me, but she has also helped five of my siblings enter college and has helped three of them graduate. As low-income and first-generation college students, my siblings and I did not know if attending college was possible, let alone know how to navigate it.
Living in the Honors and Engagement Village and being surrounded by these students would help me to meet a positive group of friends that I would be able to relate to. Being in the Honors College would also help me challenge myself by being in a competitive environment with intelligent students. My intellectual goals consist of broadening my thinking, taking demanding courses, and optimizing my learning. The Honors College assists students in developing creative and independent thinking. The Honors College also nurtures cultured and caring idea exchange. By participating in innovative discussions with other students I would be able to broaden my thinking as well as fully optimize my learning experience. If I was accepted into the Honors College I would have faculty mentoring, a close-knit learning environment, as well as challenging courses. By having full access to all of these resources I believe I would be able to reach my intellectual goals. My professional goals consist of performing service outreach projects and starting research for my professional career. During my senior year of high school I received the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship and was accepted into my soon to be alma mater, Howard University. In those times it was not uncommon for my grandmother to boast to the grocery store cashier, bank teller, or anyone who would listen that her granddaughter had received a full scholarship and was attending Harvard University. Each time I would smile and politely correct her by saying, “Grandmother I’m going to Howard not Harvard.” She and whomever she was talking with would simply protest that it did not matter which HU I was attending, they were proud of me regardless. From then on I vowed to continue to serve as an inspiration to the many members of my community who had never left the small town of Durham, NC yet alone received a higher education. I’ve since exceeded my own expectations of the things I would achieve in my college tenure. Traveling abroad, serving as an Americorps member, interning for my United States Senator, and joining distinguished organizations culminate a few of my successes.
One of many reasons that the Delta College program appeals to me is because it prepares students for real life experiences. I appreciate how the Delta College has small classes where students are more than just a number to their teachers, and receive individualized attention. Along with networking and internship opportunities that could help to to begin my career, it also excites me to know the possibility of earning my bachelor degree within three years. Another aspect of the Delta College that excites me is that students have peer mentors to help them navigate the first year of college, and for me, that would be tremendously helpful. Since I can remember, I always considered Bloomfield my home. I grew up there, went to grade school there at Immaculate Conception, made memories I will never forget there; what a better way to continue the memories by attending school there at West Penn Hospital School of Nursing. As a child, I would not have considered myself economically disadvantaged, although we were. After going through a nasty divorce that left my mom with virtually nothing and with no formal education to support us, she never let us know she was struggling. Not going to college is a big regret of my mom and she never stops pushing me to be better, go to school, get an education because it is the only thing you will always have. With all of the downfalls that I have experienced in my academic and personal life, a college education will make it possible for me to continue my journey into becoming a prestigious corporate lawyer. I have the drive for success and I am certain that with this scholarship I will be able to pay off my debt and help my mother with her own educational goals. I was content that I was able to encourage her to attend school and I am most fortunate to be given an opportunity to help both her and myself achieve our ultimate goals for the near future.
I strongly believe I deserve the “Courage to Grow” Scholarship, because ever since I can remember, my education has always been the first priority in my life. Being a determined and conscientious student, I maintained a 3.8 G.P.A. out of a 4.0 scale throughout High School, earning myself a spot on the Honor Roll list every semester. Even though learning does not come easy for me, because of my ADD, I never give up on my dreams. I also participated in many extracurricular activities such as Key Club- a volunteering organization, Book Club, and the Cheerleading team. Being a member of these clubs not only taught me leadership and communication skills, but also how to be a well-rounded student.
Moving out, meeting new people, enjoying the atmosphere you live in, challenging yourself, and getting the best education possible for yourself. That is what I am currently doing at Furman University; however, the road to arrive here was long and challenging. Naturally, my father was concerned about the cost of college, not Furman in particular, but college in general. Both my mother and I knew college wasn’t going to be cheap, especially for the experience I wanted. I was tasked with selling my father on the concept that college was going to be expensive, but it will all be worth it in the end because I will be getting the best education for myself and I will get the experience that I want.
