People are not prone to agree with one another. If you gather a dozen people together for a dinner party and the subject turns to politics or religion, then there is inevitably going to be an argument. There is one thing, however, that there is a near universal consensus on: chocolate is a wonderful and delicious thing.

Apparently, child slave labor has been out of hand in the chocolate industry for over fifteen years. In West Africa, children are forced to work on farms harvesting cocoa under inhumane conditions. They would be routinely beaten and would be given insufficient amounts of food. These children are stripped of their human rights. In July 2015, a report from Tulane University found a fifty-one percent increase in the number of children working in the cocoa industry from 2008/09 to 2013/14. In response to child slavery in West Africa, Hershey and other companies in the chocolate industry will invest $400 million by 2020 to increase the supply of certified cocoa and decrease questionable labor practices. They will educate farmers and their families of the dangers of child labor (“Lawsuit: Your Candy Bar Was Made By Child
I lived in a border-town, Baudette, when I was young. The Canadian border was no more than ten minutes away. Whenever I visited my grandmother, who lives in Rainy River, my sisters and I would go to the grocery store and get a certain chocolate. On Easter and other special events I would get the same chocolate. I assumed I could get my favorite chocolate anywhere. As a child you don’t think about whether the government allows chocolate in the States or not. These treats aren’t your grainy Hershey or deceitful Creme Eggs, these chocolates are siblings to Ferrero Rochers. They are delicious chocolates named “Kinder Surprise.” And I am full of surprise finding out my childhood candy is illegal in the U.S. In fact, they announced a recall the day I was born in 1997 (CPSC).

My campaign of hatred had begun I wanted nothing to do with it I didn’t want to see it to even mention the word chocolate was just disgusting, the smell made my stomach turn and I felt nauseous and my vision blurred but my eyes narrowed on the so called delicacy only to find that the source was something that was inevitable it was all around me. The chocolate persisted through stores through deserts, cakes, snacks and cookies the inescapable horror of something I once considered delicious I had a childish and unexplainable hatred for. Just knowing the day that people give out unlimited chocolate and sugar was approaching had upset me to the point that I wouldn’t even think twice about joining an irrational group of individuals and knocking on strangers doors for free
To start of, you will be reading about the origins of chocolate. Chocolate is a product that is based on 99% of cocoa. There are many types of chocolates for example: Unsweetened chocolate, Dark chocolate, Milk chocolate, Semi-sweet, Bitter sweet chocolate, White chocolate, and cocoa powder. The name “chocolate” comes from Nahaualtl, a language that was spoken by the Aztecs from Mexico. The Aztecs were a very religious Indian tribe from Mexico.
Teens especially will be bullied for the way they look, and they could get violent for that. They could cut themselves, or even attempt to kill themselves! All because they don’t feel pretty. So chocolate milk isn’t only unhealthy physically, but also
As you may know, chocolate has been around for many years, dating back to the Mayan and Aztec times (Ackar). This sweet treat has not always been sweet though. It started out as just plain old cocoa beans that were very bitter. Once these cocoa beans began to export and different countries started to receive them, those countries started to add spices and other items to enhance the flavor and make to the experience even more delicious.
The Theobroma cacao tree is where it all started. Olmecs, Aztecs, and Mayans were the original consumers of cocoa: they would form it into a drink and ingest it for medicinal reasons (Allen Par. 7). The Spanish then brought it back to Europe and continued to treat a variety of ailments with it (Allen Par. 7). In the last 40 years people have started to question the health benefits of chocolate, but new research is starting to prove that the Olmecs, Aztecs, Mayans and Spaniards were not too far off. Now, the pods from the tree containing cocoa beans are collected, and the cocoa beans are taken out of the pod (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The beans are then fermented, dried, roasted, then ground to make cocoa liquor (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The cocoa liquor is then combined with sugar, vanilla, and cocoa butter to make what is now known as chocolate (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). Controversy over the health benefits and detriments of chocolate is slowly subsiding, but there are many things that a lot of people still do not know about how chocolate can affect ones health. Chocolate is misunderstood.
