Adeline Yen Mah finds a way to get through her tough life and keep her head up. Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is an inspirational story. Adeline, abused and treated horribly by her stepmother, rose above her dreadful life. She is an inspiration because she keeps going when she is treated horribly and learns to have pride for who she is. Adeline is gifted with intelligence. Even though at times the story is sad it reminded me to never give up. Adeline learns to have confidence. She has a great love for school and for writing. Adeline's father is extremely proud of Adeline’s when she wins the playwriting competition. All Adeline's life all she wanted to do was please her father and make him proud. By the end of the story she's accomplished that from her playwriting competition by making her father and the rest of Hong Kong Proud of her. “Our sincere congratulations Adeline for you bringing honor to Hong Kong, we are proud of you.” (Yen Mah 191) Another thing that Adeline learns throughout the book is love. Whether it's friends pets or even close family members, Adeleine has love and compassion for them all. Even though a lot of the things in her life are horrible she gets through them and is able to become the full potential of what she can become. As Adeline says, “From that moment, I took the duckling to my heart. For the first time, I had a pet of my very own. At school I proudly described my duckling to my classmates. As I spoke, I felt a warm tender glow spreading all through me.” ( Yen Mah 73) Adeline loved and took care of her pet, she felt protective. This pet was Adeline's only friend for a while. Then one day after dinner PLT was used as a test for the vicious guard dog Jackie. Jackie hurt PLT’s leg and PLT was dead by morning. Even though Adeline is sad that her dear pet died she learns the dear and probably one of the most important lesson of the entire book, love. Adeline in the story Chinese Cinderella, has bravery, courage, and an incredible intelligence through the book. Though in her life she has troubles and tough times, she always moves forward in life. She creates her own destiny through school and the world around her. Adeline is inspiring in who she is
