The industrial revolution has many events that have occurred. Most of which were negative effects on the people of this time era. The Industrial Revolution started in Britain and then moved to other places. It moved to the United States in the 19th century. Also, the Industrial Revolution changed the way things were made as new machines invented in the 1700s and 1800s meant it was possible to mass produce goods in factories. The Industrial Revolution was negative because in the factories they would lose more money, they used child labor, and the factories polluted the air. A quote that proves this is, “Workdays would often be 10 to 14 hours with minimal breaks during the shift. Factories employing children were often very dangerous places leading to injuries and even deaths. Machinery often ran so quickly that little fingers, arms and legs could easily get caught. Beyond the equipment, the environment was a threat to children as well as factories put out fumes and toxins”(“Childhood Lost”). This quote proves that the kids during the Industrial Revolution would have to work to get money for their family and they would risk themselves and their lives just to get money. Some people say that child labor is a positive thing because children get more experience at working in the real world. “Beyond the topic of safety, children working lengthy hours had limited access to education. Many families relied on income earned by each family member and did not allow children to attend school at all”(“Childhood Lost”). This quote proves that children would work at really young ages and they would get hurt but each family member relied on each other to bring money to the family because they didn’t have enough money to survive. It was more time consuming and costly to teach the adults than it was to hire children during this start of the revolution. Children could be molded into the ideal adult worker as they rose through the ranks in the factory. Studies indicate that about 50% of workers started working in the factories when they were less then ten years of age, from this overall amount 28% of these child workers started working when they were under the age of fourteen, while only 7.8% of workers started working in the textiles from the age of twenty- one or higher (Nardinelli, 1980). The aging of the generation of child factory workers improved the quality of adult factory workers and created a reserve pool of adults with factory experience. This pool of adults was particularly significant for men. As a child worker, they were exposed to many different positions and so learned a great deal amount of experience. Not only were the children fulfilling the basic factory needs but were creating a more work experienced labor force for the future. No longer where adults having to learn how to use machinery when entering the factory market but instead had worked in a textile during their childhood so had already obtained the human capital needed to work. The factory would then profit off of this future human capital and so keep on employing the massive amount of children in order to better themselves for the future while at the same time reaping the present value of cheap labor.
