I want to save the world. This goal is the most popular among children and adults may believe I am delusional because that childish goal is still mine. I, however, am not the delusional one; my goal is better stated as -I am going to save the world- which some may see as impossible, but in reality, saving the world is simple. The world is full of anger, and disconnection. It is plagued by greed and selfishness. Once these traits are erased from sight the world will be saved. Through my high school, Incarnate Word Academy, I discovered The Center for Hearing and Speech or CHS. CHS is an organization that helps hearing impaired children--these children are often born deaf and have cochlear implants-- with their speech so that they will feel connected to society. It was at CHS where I realized that day by day I saw the smiles on the kids faces grow, since their anger and frustration with hearing-abled people’s lack of understanding diminished. Despite their hearing disability causing their speech impediments, they felt happy and connected to the world; they learned how to better put their thoughts and expressions into words that people understood. Just being able to witness that in itself is amazing, but I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to contribute to their improvements. It was at CHS my own selfishness and greed disappeared. I noticed the happiness and positivity I brought everyday I volunteered, rubbed off on the kids and even the teachers. Each day the kids were less sleepy and more excited. Excited kids meant that they were more cooperative. Cooperative kids meant that they were able to practice and better their speech. Speech is important since the kids felt more confident in they way they spoke causing them to feel more connected to the rest of the world. I
