I chose to observe a first grader who is seven years old. She is African American, she has two siblings: a sister who is in high school and a brother who is in the fifth grade. She is the youngest of the three. I chose her because she is in the first grade and I have not had many experiences working in the first grade classroom or experience in their home setting. According to the theory by Jean Piaget, he states during this stage they go beyond simply connecting sensory information with physical action. For example, when she doing her jumping jacks she had to watch peers in order to be able to them correctly. She is able to do the remedial things, however when the stretches were complex she struggled for example, she did not understand the …show more content…

The child is self-centered, thinks only about themselves and others feelings are no relevant. I saw this when she became upset and when the teacher attempted to explain the expectations she did not care about having the rest of the group and their feelings. The teacher explained how her behavior can affect the class because the teacher had to stop working with her small group to address her and she continued to cry and refuse to participate in that group before the teacher switched her. When at home she looked at the microwave and new that it was not only to warm things she also uses it to tell the time. Based on the Erickson development she is at stage four which is the industry vs. inferiority. During this stage they are continuing to work on how they view them self to include their confidence is forming. When the child is not encouraged and praised properly they could have a lower self -confidence as time progresses. I observed then when she was reading her book and became frustrated when she could not read or sound out the word correctly, however she continued to read because the teacher encouraged her and her friend who was sitting by her said, “I can help you like you help me.” Another theorist Albert Bandura, which talks about a child’s behavior will model behavior of what they see. She is in the motivation stage because she was motivated to do the activity due to her peers doing the right thing. When she became upset and went to another group if those group members were not doing their work and they were crying she would have continued to be upset, but because they were participating in the activity she participated due to them modeling the correct thing to do. Children are often influenced by their peers, however that is not a negative thing if the people they are choosing to be influenced by are positive role
