Once the Civil War finally ended the United States began to face many problems. During the late 1800s and the early 1900s the women's suffrage, labor laws, and the US regime were all reformed. The middle class campaigners, wanted to abolish all the harsh treatments that came with the sizably voluminous, growing, businesses. The control of supply or trade in a service also known as a monopoly, child labor, and corruption were apprised to the public by the muckrakers, that had a very bad impact. Upton Sinclair the author of (The Jungle) wrote mostly of the awful working conditions for the immigrants working in the meatpacking businesses. This really caught the eye of almost all americans. Jane Addams wrote the book (The spirit of Youth and the City Streets, 1909) Examining the causes of the youth in the city then argues in her book about the importance of providing direction and focus through art, public enjoyment, and education. (Doc C) Lewis Hine, a muckraking photographer took photos of child labor and raised public empathy for the children working in such horrible conditions. In 1916 during president Wilson's presidency, the Child labor Act was passed; this meaning outlawing companies from using children under fourteen years old. Socially, America was gaining strength, with women such as Jane Addams, a women's rights activist, entering the progressive fight. According to a study, the percent of eligible voters who cast ballots in Presidential elections were at a somewhat steady rate from 1904 to 1916, ranging from 59-65%, but in the 1920 election, only 49% of eligible voters actually cast ballots. (Document J) Although some may argue that the percent decrease was due to most Americans not liking any of the elected Presidential candidates, and therefore not voting, this is untrue because this was the first election in which women could vote, which threw of the ratio of voters and non-voters. She was now getting into the field of labor agitation and would change America forever. In 1903, she organized a march in which children, mutilated from their jobs, marched the streets to the home of Theodore Roosevelt in order to draw attention to the grueling and wicked child labor laws. “Federal laws against child labor would not come for decades, but for two months that summer, Mother Jones, with her street theater and speeches, made the issue front-page news.” This shows how after several attempts from previous progressive reformers, Jones was the only one whose protests were powerful and effective enough to open people’s eyes to the issues. A reason that Jones had become so effective was that of her exploration and observations. She frequently visited factories to observe the cruel working conditions in which people worked in and interviewed workers to get a feel for them and understand the brutality of the work. She stated herself that because of rough conditions, “The brain is so crushed as to be incapable of thinking, and one who mingles with these people soon discovers that their minds like their bodies are wrecked. Loss of sleep and loss of rest gives rise to abnormal appetites, indigestion, shrinkage of statue, bent backs and aching hearts.” By examining workplaces, she was able to gather empathy and sympathy for the workers who were suffering.
The Progressive Era was a period in which the federal government increased its legislation and its grasp of the nation. There were three distinct pieces of federal legislation that seem to stick out, The Meat Inspection Act The Federal Reserve Act,, and The Hepburn Act. All of this legislation gave the government an extremely large amount of power to regulate business and industry as well as the people of the United States of America.
On August 18, 1920 the nineteenth amendment was fully ratified. It was now legal for women to vote on Election Day in the United States. When Election Day came around in 1920 women across the nation filled the voting booths. They finally had a chance to vote for what they thought was best. Not only did they get the right to vote but they also got many other social and economic rights. They were more highly thought of. Some people may still have not agreed with this but they couldn’t do anything about it now. Now that they had the right to vote women did not rush into anything they took their time of the right they had.
In August 18, 1920, the U.S. Constitution Granted U.S. women a right. That was the right of vote. In American history women had no right to vote or be part of government. They were born to be at home and do the house choir and motherhood. They had no right to educate or go out, thus the 19th amendment was approved that gave the women the right to vote (Matthew, 2017). Having the right of votes for women was not easy. It was given to them after years of fighting and struggling, after fighting and protesting so long for their rights they were finally victorious. The 19th amendment granted women the right to vote and was ratified in 1920 during Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat’s, presidency. ... During this era the fact that children had rights was arguable, it was not until the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1901 that this fact was actually recognized. In the 1830’s a series of acts were passed to try to ensure safety of these working children, laws such as The Chimney Sweepers Act of 1788 , The Victorian Child Labor Laws Against the use of Child Chimney Sweeps, The Chimney Sweepers and The Chimneys Regulation Act of 1840 and Chimney Sweepers Act of 1875. The success of these laws came due to the increasing acceptance of the idea that children deserve to enjoy their childhood. As the era progressed, artist created works that “embodied the innocence of children” and also depicted the horrible conditions that they were forced to work in (Kincaid 22). Even with such blunt depiction of the work conditions, change did not come rapidly but it came nevertheless.
Factories were utilizing children to do the hard work. They employed children as young as five or six to work as many as twenty hours a day. According to Document C, children worked in factories to build up muscles and having good intellect in working rather than getting an education. They became a different person rather than conventional children. There were additionally health issues due to child labor: rapid skeletal growth, greater risk of hearing loss, higher chemical absorption rates, and developing ability to assess risks. Progressive Era reformers believed that child labor was detrimental to children and to society. They believed that children should be protected from harmful environments, so they would become healthy and productive adults. In 1912, Congress created the Children’s Bureau to benefit children. Child labor laws need to be enforced more because governments are paying little attention to those who abuse the laws; therefore children are being abused physically by long hours and economically by low pay. Farmers and many businesses in third world countries are accused of taking major advantage of these laws. This topic is highlighted as one of the highest controversial issues in labor politics. Child labor is a major issue in countries such as Africa, Argentina, and Bangladesh. For example, in Africa, some children do the work of a grown man for as little as one dollar a day. On the other hand, in the United States some studies show that child labor is a bigger problem in the U.S than some third world countries (Barta and others). Many farmers are facing a huge problem; the government is attempting to keep children from working long hours on their family farms.
How The Jungle Influenced Social Reform and Socialism Beginning in the late 19th century, many people became concerned with many social problems resulting from the industrialization period of the United States. People began to demand reform. The writing of the book The Jungleby Upton Sinclair was one of the most influential tools used to reform many American industries. In this book, Sinclair focuses on the unsanitary conditions and corruption that was involved in the Chicago meat packing industry.
