Chief Pushmataha was born about 1764 in the State of Mississippi (choctawnation.com). His demeanor was calm and dignified, plus was the most highly respected Indian leader of his day by the white man as well as continuously being their friend. Historians have given “him credit equal to that of the renowned Andrew Jackson in saving the Southern States to the United States in the War of 1812” (choctawnation.com). Pushmataha had become a brigadier-general of the American army and lead eight hundred Choctaw people in the war of 1812. The Choctaw people, along with other tribes, were confronting hardship and elimination because the settlers were doing so well with their crops in the south that they wanted the Indian land as well.
