Fatigue is the most common side effect of chemotherapy, it effect over 70 percent of chemotherapy patients, to help fatigue it might be good to move around but it is also good to rest. Out of those people, 14,320 people are estimated to die from their brain or nervous system cancer diagnosis (National Cancer Institute). Cancer is a type of dangerous tumor, or a buildup of extra cells that form a mass of tissue, that can be life threatening (National Cancer Institute). The term for a tumor that is cancerous is a malignat tumor, whereas a benign tumor does not contain cancer cells (National Cancer Institute). According to the National Cancer Institute, the causes of brain cancer are unknown, but risk factors include family history and excessive radiaton exposure. Although they are not always due to a brain tumor, comon symptoms include headaches, nausea, speech, hearing, vision, and mood changes, problems with balance and mamories, seizures, and numbness in arms and legs (National Cancer Institute). MRI and CT scans as well as surgical biposies (or the removal of part of the tumor to be examined) are used to diagnose brain cancer (National Cancer Institute). Different types of treatment options include radiation therapy, surgery to remove the tumor, and chemotherapy. When we hear the words, cancer treatment, our minds naturally shoot straight to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is one of the most commonly used ways to treat cancer. Chemotherapy did not have original plans to treat cancer patients, but it did have other plausible problems to aid. After WWII, lymphoma, a form of chemotherapy, was used to help soldiers who were harmed by mustard gas (Chemo Brain, 2012). This medical advancement continued to progress into what we now know as chemotherapy. However, no action takes precedence without effects, good or bad. Although chemotherapy is given to cancer patients in hopes of a positive outcome, chemo can have negative effects. Common effects that are seen in cancer patients who have received a form of chemotherapy treatment may experience: “chemo brain”, anemia, and nausea along with vomiting (Chemo Brain, 2012). I have been doing chemotherapy and radiation treatment for 8 days now. I am so tired. Tired of this cancer. Tired of this treatment. I never would have guessed the sizeable toll that this has taken on me. First of all, the chemo is making me lose some of my hair, and I am physically drained all of the time. Also, the pills don’t taste very good. And also I can’t feel my fingertips or my toes. I guess that’s just a side effect from one of the two.
I had the pleasure to interview my grandma, Olga Hernandez. She was born on November 8, 1951 in Cuba. She worked in a workshop making clocks. After she retired, she took care of me while my mom worked. I consider her to be my second mom because she lived with me for eight years. She taught me love, discipline, manners, etc. My grandma is: strong, beautiful, caring, and passionate. Most importantly, she is a breast cancer survivor. I chose to interview my grandma because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I couldn’t think of a better time to do this interview. I like her story because although it’s sad, it has a happy ending. It shows you that no matter how hard things get, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.
Some of the cons of chemotherapy are worse thant the actual cancer itself. 1. Chemotherapy may be inafective for some, 2. The physical side effects are but not limited to; nausea, vomiting, alopecia or hairloss, which can be extremely psychological especially for female patients.
