There has always been a heated debate on whether or not checking should be legal in youth hockey. You, and some of the people you replaced voted to remove checking in hockey for kids 12 and under back in the 2011-2012 season. Now the debate is whether or not you should remove checking in U14 hockey. You should not, and here is why…

Checking has always been apart of hockey, long back when it was first played. Checking and physicality are one of the reasons many people play hockey. Most people that play hockey are already aware of these dangers in the sport and are okay with the risks. These people and players are okay with a 200-pound person on a frictionless surface skating at them full speed. They enjoy the thrill and If you are not okay with the risks in playing hockey, I suggest not playing and finding a different sport. Many players will check an opponent to create space between them and the puck or to take the puck away from an opponent along the boards. This useful kind of checking is used to stop an opponent on defense and create an offensive push. Without checking, in the open and along the boards, it will be much harder to separate and an opponent from the puck, which makes it harder to become on the offensive side.

Let’s face it, checking will never be removed from adult leagues. Which means the younger kids learn how to check, and how to protect themselves from checks, the more likely they will be better at handling those situations later in their career. If kids don’t learn to check at younger ages, by the time they are in the checking leagues, they will not know how to do things like protecting themselves from a check, and to prevent injury. Also, they won’t be as valuable to the team because they aren’t able to check properly to create an offensive
