Charlotte Perkins Gilman has already expressed her strong feelings about women and the way they’re viewed. Gilman’s outlook on the fact that believes there is no real difference, related to, the mental state between men or women is strongly made clear through “The Yellow Wallpaper”. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story about a female who has a mental illness but is not capable of healing because of her spouse’s lack of belief. The story feels to have a setting during a time in life where women were treated harshly. Women were handled as inferior citizens in society during this period of time. Charlotte precisely represents the way of thinking of the society during the time period in which “The Yellow Wallpaper” was being written. Using the characteristics of feminism, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins, I was able to survey through the eyes of both the male and female point of view, and through the symbol found in the story. …show more content…

The Narrator quotes “If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression-slight hysterical tendency- what is one to do?” (Gilman) and that describes how men saw woman as juveniles rather than adults because they were not able to make their own decisions such as changing the wallpaper or moving to a different room. The other side of women is described as well when Gilman mentioned the women felt free once she let the wallpaper go and no longer feeling imprisoned by her family.
