Charlie Gordon is a thirty-two year old man who is diagnosed mentally challenged but, is very eager to be smart. In order for this to happen Charlie will have to have surgery. There will be two doctors assisting Charlie; Dr.Strauss and Dr.Nemur. In the novel the two doctors are to totally different in how they motivated Charlie, treatment for Charlie and their reasoning for helping him. Since Charlie was chosen to have the surgery Dr.Strauss wants Charlie to write progress reports. This is so Charlie can write how he feels before and after his surgery. This shows that Dr.Strauss cares about Charlie and want to know how Charlie feels. Also, he wanted to see his Charlie’s progress after his surgery. Nemur is stating that he is able to make all decisions for Charlie because he is the leader. He seems as if he is trying to take all the credit for Charlie’s surgery. Dr.Strauss felt as though it just wasn’t time to start talking about Charlie’s surgery because Charlie was not done changing.”This is too important to all of us to bring out into the open prematurely.You’re taking the authority on yourself”(Keyes 68). Strauss is explaining to Nemur that he is controlling the project and making decisions on his own. But, Dr.Nemur feels as though he has done everything correctly with the surgery so nothing could possibly go wrong. In this novel Charlie didn’t have much motivation. For example, during the procedure with Algernon, Algernon was given cheese to help motivate him get to the end of the maze. I Dr. Strauss, chose Charlie for the surgery, it got me a lot of grief from Dr.Nemur but I knew it was the right choice. Charlie is a man of low intellect but he is very cooperate, motivated, and not hostile. These traits are exceptionally rare in a man of 68 IQ. Another reason that Dr. Nemur and I chose Charlie was that he worked extremely hard in Miss Kinnians class. Working hard got him to be the best because he picked up spelling and writing faster than others in the class. We discovered their different identities and how their choices and role models effect their lives. Wes 1 was led by his brave, hard working mother and the great military men. In The Other Wes Moore, the author and a neighbor have the same name, Wes Moore, and they both begin their lives in similar ways. However, as their lives progress, they begin to part. For example, both “lost” their fathers when they were young. Because of the way their mothers respond to this loss, the boys’ lives begin to separate. Both mothers have different responses to challenges in general, which eventually leads them to respond to their child’s actions in contrasting ways. Throughout this novel, readers learn that depending on how a mother decides to react to the negative actions of their child’s actions, the child can either lead a successful life or lead a life of failure.

When was the last time you wanted something so much, you would sacrifice your life to have it; even if just for a moment? Charlie Gordon, a 37 year old man with a learning disability, did just that. In the story "Flowers for Algernon", by Daniel Keyes, Charlie gets a chance to alter his I.Q. substantially through operation. The only drawback to this is, the long-term outcomes of the operation are unknown. The operation does succeed, but later Charlie is sent on a riveting downward spiral into the life he tried to run away from. The operation hurt Charlie in every imaginable way; and did nothing to help him.
Charlie Gordon is the main character in "Flowers for Algernon." He under goes an operation to enhance his level of intelligence preformed by two doctors, Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss. Since Charlie has an IQ that is below average and is the first patient to agree to commit to this surgery, his side affects could include loss of memory, unable to complete certain tasks, poor grammar and spelling, and even fatality. Charlie wants to proceed with the operation since he believes that he should as intelligent as normal human beings and he is sick of others making fun of him because of his disabilities. The experimental surgery that Charlie underwent to triple his intelligence had three major effects on his life.
Algernon is a smart mouse, who has undergone the same operation as Charlie. Charlie's victory shows his increase in knowledge. This also shows that his brain is developing. Charlie then gains more knowledge. After writing a few more progress reports, one can see a huge change in Charlie's writing, especially in his grammar.

In this novel, Flowers for Algernon, written by Daniel Keyes, a man named Charlie Gordon has an operation done to increase his intelligence. He started as a mentally retarded man and slowly became a genius. He seemed to soak up information like a sponge and he was able to figure out the most complex scientific formulas. The only problem with the operation is that it does not last for ever and in his remaining time he tries to figure out why it is not permanent. He will eventually lose everything he learned and become worse off than when he started, so Charlie was better off before he had the operation.
“In order to succeed, we must first believe we can” (motivational quote by Nikos Kazantzakis). This quote shows how most people think of motivation as something that encourages you to do better. This is not completely true. Motivation is what drives to you take action. Motivation is usually caused by some sort of an event. In the stories, “The Three-Century Woman” by Richard Peck and “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, it demonstrates how motivation can cause character’s to make certain actions that were never to be expected. Both texts show that just the smallest things can motivate you to do something very different.

This is my journal entry for pages one through five. I feel sorry for Charlie Gordon because he doesn't understand what's going around him, and what people mean. Such as the incident with Burt and the Rorschach test. But you can tell he’s trying really hard to pass the test to get the research done on him. You can really tell he wants became for intelligent, it's admirable of him.
