Have you ever wondered who created the “Peanuts” comics, that appear in your local newspaper? At the age of twenty-five, and in seven newspapers Charles Monroe Schulz debuted “Peanuts” in 1950. Many people have never heard the name Charles Schulz, but his comics are well known. All through Charles’s childhood he enjoyed reading comics, and later in life he became a successful comic writer.

On November 22, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Charles Monroe Schulz was born. Charles had no siblings and his two parents were Carl and Dena Schulz. His father Carl, worked in a barber shop. Because people always needed haircuts, Charles and his family were not affected by the Great Depression of the 1930’s. At an early age Charles showed an interest in comics. He read comics in the newspapers with his dad, and his Uncle even nicknamed him Sparky after Spark Plug (a race horse), that was a character in the comic “Barney Google”.

Some people say that Schulz based Charlie Brown on himself, but Charles based his characters on events/people that happened in his life. Shortly after “Peanuts” was published, Charles married Joyce Halverson in 1951. More events entered the strip as more events happened in his life. His children Meredith, Charles Jr., Monte, Craig, Amy, and Jill had a toy piano and Charles featured in his comic. In 1955 Charles won the Reuben Award which is given to the best cartoonist of the year. Charles’s comic was in more than four thousand newspapers and more and more people were reading “Peanuts” and even children would read the comic, though Charles geared it more towards adults like most comics
