Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which each person is able to comprehend his or her own potential, manage the normal stresses of life, work effectively, and have an involvement in the community. A mentally healthy human being is in touch with reality, can identify with other people and adapt well to situations in their environment, and can solve conflicts. Mentally healthy folks have psychobiological elasticity. Mental illnesses usually have definable diagnoses. The person who experiences a psychiatric or mental illness has lost the skill to act in response to their surroundings in ways that are in agreement with self or with the expectations of the world. I met this friend when I was working at KRQE-TV 13. She is married and has three boys. The boys’ ages range from six years of age to 18 years of age. She works full-time, takes her boys to school every morning, and attends all of their sports activities in the evenings. She always goes home and makes dinner for them; she always puts her family first. Also, she is actively involved in church. She prefers for her children to attend a religious school known as St. Therese Catholic School; they usually go there from kindergarten to eighth grade. With all the involvement she has, she is always able to cope with each situation. It might not be today, it might not be tomorrow, but it will be someday soon. Some people are able to handle the everyday situations and stresses that happen, some are not. If you keep everything bottled up inside and don’t talk about it, it is just going to get harder and harder to deal with all the things that are happening in your life. Therapy sometimes can help an individual cope with all the difficulty they are facing. Some people need medication to help them cope with reality.
