Character Analysis: The Salem Witch Trials

Witch hunt is defined as, “an investigation carried out ostensibly to uncover subversive activities but actually used to harass and undermine those with differing views” (“Witch Trials.” The Free Dictionary, Farlex, www.thefreedictionary.com/Witch+trials). In the winter of 1962 in Salem Village of Massachusetts, the notorious witch trials took place. It began when Betty, daughter of Reverend Parris (the towns minister) was ill, she would not wake, and then when she did, she acted possessed. Abigail, Parris’ niece was discovered dancing in the forest with a fire, singing, and mixing a pot over the fire with Betty and a group of girls. Abigail targeted Tituba, followed by Sarah Good and Sarah Osburn. The townspeople went along with this because these people were all outcasts, and were easy targets to accuse. “I want to open myself! I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (Miller 48). The townspeople then started to accuse others, and the hysteria even grew to other towns, but Abigail and the girls were pretending. Mary Warren even tried to speak out against them in court.“I-I cannot tell how, but I did. I-I heard the other girls screaming, and you, Your Honor, you seemed to believe them, and I- It were only a sport in the beginning, sir, but then the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I-I promise you, Mr. Danforth, I only thought I saw them but I did not” (Miller 107). Abigail, not wanting to get caught, accused Mary Warren, she and the girls then saw Mary’s spirit as a bird flying toward them, claws spread out and they ran out of the court.
