I have chosen “The Parable of the Prodigal Son” from Luke 15:11-32. With some research I found that there are meanings and representations behind some of the character in this section. For example the Prodigal Son represents the Gentiles who were at the time non- Jews. The father represents God. This can be seen by how he reaches out to all this includes those who repent and people of different race. The older brother was jealous and represented the Jews of this time. This can be seen when the brother returns. Instead of being happy for him he is annoyed because of the celebration. The Jews during this time where adamantly opposed to Christianity and did not like to have anything to do with them. They believed that salvation was only for …show more content…

The following is what I perceived from the section. The passage begins with his youngest son asking his father to give him his share of the estate. The father in return splits up the land between the two sons and gives the youngest his half. After receiving the land the youngest packs up his stuff and moves away. “The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them” Luke 15:12. During The sons time away from home he lived an adventurous and expensive life. He was very immature and spent money like it grew on trees. The son lived his life in this style until the land fell under famine and lost all of his inheritance. After losing all his money he fears what his father may think. I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father” Luke 15:17-20. Once the son returned home his father welcomed him with open arms. The family rejoiced that the youngest son had returned. The son begged for forgivness but in all the excitement form the father he couldn’t get the words out. “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate” Luke 15:22-24. While the father was very excited for the sons return the brother however is not. In fact the brother was angered at his younger brothers return because under the circumstances that his brother left he could not understand why there was so much celebration for his return.
