Janie Mae Crawford is the main character of the book “Their Eyes Were on God”. She is a girl who is mixed white and black ancestry who came about because her mother 17-year-old Leafy was raped by a white school teacher. Abandoned by her mother and raised by her grandmother, Janie struggles with fulfilling her own wishes and complying of what she is expected of. She often sympathizes to the needs of others around her, rather than fulfilling her own dreams. Throughout the story she is a target for men because of her pursuit for romance. She goes through three marriages that teach her about different sides to love. Janie’s first marriage is one that she coerced into by her grandmother where she marries an older man who she doesn’t love. From that short marriage with Logan Killicks, she find out that marriage does not necessarily bring love. She suffers under Joe’s controlling possessive personality. She is forced to keep silent, stops her from talking with the others and hides her hair. Janie is just a symbol for Joe to show off.
