Detective Maya Vasquez is the protagonist of the show. She comes from a lower end of a middle class economic background and is a native of Lake Arthur. Three ways to describe her are: intrepid, a straight-shooter, and persistent. Maya is also Latina which plays an important role in the way she is treated by side characters. She did not attend college, but did attend and complete her training at a police academy. Maya’s character is similar to the theme in Shondaland of having a multi-dimensional career-driven female lead. However, unlike Scandal’s Olivia Pope and How to Get Away With Murder’s Annalise Keating, Maya Vasquez is not world-renowned or even well revered within her own town. Michael is a static character (unlike Molly he doesn’t change much throughout the show), a white male, and a talented computer hacker. Michael is significantly younger than the other main characters and serves as some of the comic relief for the show. He is the third character in the dysfunctional trio (Maya, Celina, Michael). Together they all have different strengths and though they’re reluctant to be grouped together sometimes, they round each other out. Michael comes from a middle-class background, does well in school, and does not have any of the barriers up against him that the other characters have had. His relationship with the other two characters, specifically Molly’s is similar to Jesse Pinkman and Walter White’s relationship in the first season of Breaking Bad (Wilmore. The age difference puts Maya in a position of authority, but Michael is invaluable to her investigation because of his creativity and computer skills. Molly Eknath, 28 Molly is a side character and Celina’s older sister. She was in the same high school class as Maya Vasquez and unlike Celina she was able to get a scholarship to attend both undergraduate and graduate school. She occasionally visits Celina in Lake Arthur. Molly works for the Department of Energy and her knowledge of the confidential projects in New Mexico become important to the story.
