Character Analysis: My Brother Dying

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be responsible your own brother's death? Well the narrator/brother or Doodle knew what that's like, clearly it wasn't an accident for leaving him behind letting him die. Brother was a cruel person for leaving his own brother to die at such a young age, he had so much more to live for than being trampled by rain. The narrator was embarrassed by his brother being crippled so he would force activities and challenges onto him. This lead him not to follow the important Do's and Don'ts with Doodle, and finally was when he had taken it too far. Since he was embarrassed of Doodle being crippled he would threaten him about being different than others as if it was a way of him saying Doodle will be made fun of because of it, as noted when he said, “ Aw, come on Doodle. You can do it. Do you want to be different from everyone else when you start school.“ ( Pg. 8 ) This could be a form of verbal abuse or a threat. “ ( Pg.3 ). This can lead to getting Doodle seriously injured or even lead to his death. When Brother was training Doodle they were rowing a boat before a storm had hit and Brother didn't help Doodle get back to shore in time. “ Black clouds began to gather in the southwest, & he kept watching them, trying to pull the oars a little faster. “ ( Pg.11 ) This is extremely dangerous because if Brother would have helped, Doodle would have been alive now. They got on shore but it was raining heavily and Brother wanted to see if Doodle could run so he ran and left him behind to see if he could do it, “ I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us. “ ( Pg. 11 ).
