Before starting the collaborative project, it was essential to participate in previous theatre productions, whether that be as a performer, director, or part of the tech crew. I have had a role in all of these major theatrical components and have learned a significant amount of skills and information from each. As a performer, I learned to be attentive and how to take orders from a director. Not only so, but I also discovered the importance of connecting with the character in which I was portraying. It is essential to connect with the character you are portraying because without connection, one cannot adequately become the character. As a director, I learned the importance of timing, collective corporation, and stage placement when it comes to actors and objects. Being a director is a crucial position within theatre because the director controls every action occurring on the stage. As I took on the role of a member of the tech crew, specifically the assistant stage manager, I must say that I found it to be much more important than I previously expected it to be. The tech crew ensures that all of the key elements of the production are put together such as props, set pieces, and lighting. Being part of the tech crew was a humbling experience because it brought light to another part of the theatre production that I did not realize was just as important as the rest. I previously felt the tech crew only set up the stage for success, while the actors did the rest of the work that really brought the show alive. However, without the stage crew and all of the work that goes into the production of a show, the story the script creates would not be merely as effective in portraying reality. This particular theatre company stood out to us, due to the process in which they devise a script for their productions. The company employs what they refer to as “Dreamer Realistic Critic”. In this process, they initially start with a bold and imaginative idea. This idea is very complex and creative, yet pushes the limits of the realistic world. The next step in the process is to consider how they can make unrealistic dreams a reality on the stage. They do so by use of technology and construction. Finally, they construct a list that states the limits of the practical world and reconsider the unrealistic components of the idea with realistic ones while still keeping the imaginative pieces alive. Ideas that cannot come to life realistically on the stage are simplified into something that can be displayed in a similar way, so they do not have to completely disown the idea. Not only so, but the theatre company also focuses on physiological disorders and attempts to bring awareness to them through their works. Our idea for the collaborative project focuses on a mental disorder, PTSD. Therefore, the theatre company’s attention to such disorders encouraged us to utilize their process even more so.
