Chapter three: physical bullying Physical bullying is another popular way of bullying. It can be hitting, pushing, tripping, slapping, spitting, & stealing. It can hurt a lot more than cyber bullying. It can put bruises, stitches, or scars on people. It makes kids not want to come to school because of it. It makes people feel unsafe around other people. And it makes them not want to be social.
One example of physical bullying is the percentage of kids who do not come to school because of it. Over 160,000 teens skip school because of physical bullying. Also 90% of of students in 4th through 8th grade reported of being bullied. And 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of bullying that just keeps repeating. And worst of all 3.2 million
According to a study conducted by the American Medical Association, “ over 15,000 6th-10th graders, approximately 3.7 million youths engage in and more than 3.2 million are victims of moderate or serious bullying each year” (Cohn, A, & Canter, A, 2003). Bullying not only takes place in person but can presented in many different forms and manners. Some including online or more formally known as cyberbullying, where a person is threatened by the means of online communication or social networking. According to Statistics Canada (2009), “1 in 10 adults living in a household with children reported a child victim of cyberbullying” (StatsCan, 2009). Other types of bullying include physical bullying, where a person is at a risk of physical threats. Verbal bullying, where a person deals with a the use of words to verbally upset the victim (Cohn, A & Canter A, 2003). Also emotional bullying which can include things such as spreading rumours with the intent on hurting the victims feelings.
For example physical, verbal, and cyber. You can find a bunch of articles, books, and movies out there that tell cases of bullying. Some are pretty well known around and majority are never heard of. The story of Amanda Todd is a very famous story that involves bullying. In Amanda Todd’s story she goes through depression from all the bullying and harassment that she went through and eventually committed suicide. Committing suicide is a very common variable when it comes to bullying. People think that death is an easy way out of their problems, and it’s not. There are cases when the person who is being bullied has had enough where they do the opposite of suicide and commit murder. In this case that person will usually commit mass murder through a school shooting. Bullying is a very common thing that has been happening for a long time. A famous event was the Columbine shooting of April 20th,1999 when it was theorized that two boys shot down the school due to bullying. Even famous people have admitted to being bullied. To name a few there are Lady Gaga, Megan Fox, Rihanna, Tom Cruise, and the president himself Barack
Not only is it already hard to be a teenager, but having to deal with constant teasing and harassment is just something no one needs. There is a point in life where bullying can become so terrifying that students will rather stay at home than have to face their bully. Darnell “Dynasty” Young is a 17 year old gay teen who has gone through every possible way to stop his bullies from harassing him. His mother has tried everything but hasn’t been able to put a stop to it. Until one day, Young’s mother bought Darnell a stun gun. His mother told him to bring it to school and when the bullies began to torment him to take it out. He did just that, he did not actually shoot anyone he just waved it up in the air to intimidate his bullies. He not only got suspended but he also got arrested, yet the six boys teasing him and calling him names received no punishment whatsoever. (CNN) Young is one of the many kids that go through this type of abuse in a place where they should feel safe. This is an example of the school failing to do anything to prevent this kind of behavior, even after the parents try to intervene. This is also a great example of parents failing to implement high behavior standards by enforcing them to retaliate. Parents should be there to advice a peaceful way of resolving this in a non violent way not give them the weapon. By implementing prevention programs such as activities that help fight bullying can ultimately lead to the end of this horrific thing some kids face each day.
This book starts off with describing a student who is a perfect target for bullies named Will. Will has been bullied multiple times by Shane and his group. Katie has been protecting Will since elementary school but now it is high school and protecting Will can become a real cost. Devan who is a part of Shane’s bully team now realizes that bullying isn’t right. As a team all three teens struggle throughout grade nine and realize the problems in life. This book has problems that rise for Will throughout this story, that raises more and more anger for Katie and Will. The climax of this book starts when Devan starts realizing how bad bullying is, but not only does he not want to be a part of Shane’s bully team but hints have been layout throughout

Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. But the other outlets, such as cyber bullying are definitely not something to take lightly or consider low on a scale of importance. Sexual harassment, racial differences, not being “cool enough”, or just simply being viewed as a weaker individual may attribute to many of the reasons a person is preyed on.
Bullying is a major social problem experienced in many countries around the world. Bullying is intentionally causing harm to an individual, using an association that is based on power imbalance (Juvonen and Sandra 159). Bullying is usually repetitive and persistent. However, in some unique case, a single act of bullying can have continued or permanent effect on a victim. Studies show that every two children between the age of 8 and 16 are being bullied in schools (StopBullying, 2013). A school is a place where all the kids learn how to behave, respect one another and also a place where they should feel safe. Unfortunately, we have a problem in our school of bullying that needs to be acknowledged. There is a high prevalence rate, and yet in some countries, the rates are higher (Juvonen and Sandra 159). Bullying has various detrimental psychological impacts. Apart from immediate health effects, bullying also leads to cases of depressions, lowered self-esteem and anxiety, even after the victim grows up. Some scholars have linked bullying to truancy, suicidal thoughts as well as eating disorders (Juvonen and Sandra 161). This paper discusses a solution of bullying and proposes various techniques of addressing the problem.

Physical bullying is one of the most obvious forms of bullying that is used to gain power and control over. Most of the time aggressors will be stronger, bigger and will for a physical attack on an individual such as hitting, kicking, slapping, shoving, and punching. Verbal bullying is when the aggressor(s) will name-call and use words and statements to gain control. This form of bullying is one of the most difficult ones to identify mainly because it happens most when adults are not present. These cruel insults are used to belittle or hurt an individual. This form of bullying is mostly used to target those of special needs. Hidden bullying is very sneaky and deceptive. This form of bullying often goes unnoticed by teachers and parents. This form of bullying is also sometimes identified as emotional because this type involves social manipulation. Hidden bullying a lot of the times form groups, spread rumors, break confidences and more. Lastly one of the most common type used is cyber bullying. Cyber bullying has became so popular that it is viral. Cyber bullying is when the aggreessor (s) use technology such as the internet, cell phone, tablet or any form of electronic to harrass, embrass, or threaten and individual. Cyber bullying can include posting hurtful images, sending cruel texts and emails, as well as making threats online. Educators attempt to provide safe, nurturing environments where students can thrive. Any disturbance to this climate can have negative affects on students’ educational performances. Bullying is one such disruption. Unfortunately, physical and verbal abuse are nothing new in the school setting, however, the rise of technology in our country has created a new setting for bullies to target their victims. Cyberbulling, or the use of any number of technological means to harm or harass another, has become an increasingly prevalent occurrence, specifically among school-aged children (Campfield, 2006).
Bullying includes actions that can be physical, mental, or emotional and result in one person having power over another (Jenson, Jeffery M.,et al).There is also Cyber bullying which is using technology to degrade and belittle the victim (“Teenager Bullying”). Physical bullying is the most easily identified form of bullying. It is when the bully tries to bodily control the victim by hitting or striking (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is when the bully is trying to get the victim to feel lonely or secluded from others (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is often a method that girls use instead of boys (“Teenage Bullying”).
There are four different types of bullying. These are physical, verbal, indirect, and cyber bullying. Physical bullying includes any type of physical contact towards another person that is unwanted, such as hitting, kicking, pinching, punching, even spitting. Breaking others possessions or simply taking their belongings are also examples of physical bullying. When the parents physically abuse children, they often feel as if it is their fault they are being knocked around. If the child has no one to talk to, or no one to tell, the physical abuse can go on for years and cause multiple problems for the child, even in their adult years.
Knowing the types of ways an individual can be bullied is important. The common type of bullying is among children in school, which in most cases, happens physically: whereby the child is beaten, which Mary and her brother Ralph experienced while growing up. For example, Mary’s brother on several occasions went home from school with bruises which he got from being hit by his classmates. Physical bullying occurs when a student is trying to gain power over peers and to get such power, him or her results to hitting, which in return is detrimental to the victim. Physical bullying is the easiest type of bullying to be identified, thereby, making it a little bit easier to stop or control.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” These words have been repeated countless times, but they are not accurate. In truth, words can kill. Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
