Immigrants across the globe face challenges and difficulties throughout their lives. But if they came to America in hope for something better but getting something worse, America would be one of the worse challenges they ever face. Esperanza Ortega from the book “Esperanza rising,” faced many challenges mainly in America. Esperanza faces many challenges like her mom being sick with valley fever and not knowing how to do house chores because she had always had servants doing the chores for her. In this essay you will see the many challenges Esperanza faces throughout the book. Esperanza faces many challenges as an immigrant. One of the challenges that she faces is not knowing how to do daily chores. When Esperanza made it to the camp, she had to do daily chores. She did not know how to do the chores because before, she had always had servants do the chores for her. On page 107, towards the end of the last paragraph, Mamma told Esperanza, “‘But I don’t know how to do chores!’ Esperanza said, ‘Isabel will show you how’ mamma said” This quote shows that Esperanza doesn’t know how to do chores. Americans apparently think that Mexicans are dirtier than Americans. On page 218, it reads, “‘ Mexicans can only swim in it on Friday afternoon before they get to clean it saturday morning.’ Esperanza pounded the dough a little too hard. ‘Do they think we are dirtier than others?’” This is when they are talking about the new camp coming to Oklahoma and about the swimming pool they have there. If I were in her position right now, I would be so mad! Also, on page 209, it says, “‘Gracias’ whispered Marta. ‘I’m sorry I misjudged you.’” This statement proves that mexicans aren’t dirty, they are misjudged by others.
