Celebrity Activism Awareness There are many celebrities who support and promote causes and charities to create awareness about peace, humanitarian causes, poverty, and illness in the world. Does celebrity activism really have the intention to help others or do celebrities get involved in it because they want to enhance their reputation? Although some celebrity activists do not have a good reputation because of their bad behavior, they contribute to society by giving donations or by supporting good causes. Celebrity activism matters because celebrities are powerful tools who raise awareness of good causes. Celebrities have the power to attract people’s attention, for instance, their fans, to influence them to support the important causes. As stated by The New York Times, an American daily newspaper founded and continuously published in New York City since September 18, 1851. “For a second year in a row Miley Cyrus generated a lot of attention at the MTV Video Music Awards, this time by sending 22-year-old homeless man to accept an award in her place to draw attention to homeless youth in the United States.” To put it another way, Miley Cyrus wanted to be the attention center in the middle of the MTV Video Music Awards so that all the people who were there, and also all the viewers, can see what she is doing for the less fortunate. However, I think that it does not matter if Miley Cyrus helped the homeless only to fix her reputation because her support to the homeless people is being known a an honorable action. It helped on young people to find the opportunities to step into resolving issues to be able to take accountability and move forward with their
Trying to make the world a better place, you would think would be coming from adults but most of it is coming from teens. These teens are called teen activists. I think that the good things they are doing, are for someone else, not themselves. The first reason is, Hannah Taylor, she created the Ladybug Foundation for people who don't have a home. She wasn’t doing that to draw attention to herself. She was doing it because she thought homelessness was completely wrong. The second reason is Angela Zhang “found a potential cure for cancer.” (CBS News) She wasn’t doing it to show off. Alex Scott had a lemonade stand and the money she raised, she gave to her hospital and didn’t keep it for herself. The thing they all have in common is that they are just good people. Those are the good things about all the teen activist I researched.
In a world where billionaires and celebrities can have more influence over the public than government, the word power has become interchangeable with success. Although many of us have fantasized of our lives if we were famous, the majority of the population have given up on the notion of becoming famous, and have become more realistic towards future dreams and desires. However, what qualities drive people of fame to do things that keep their name out in the eye of the public? People desire power. Genuine power is the ability to influence.

While working with George Clooney, many movie directors like Jerry Weintraub have been known to yell “Where the hell is Clooney?” while on set for a movie; meanwhile, Clooney is off pranking a fellow cast mate or good friend. Clooney, being a prankster and all around charming guy, brings a positive vibe to any room. Sometimes this positivity can come from his pranks, spontaneous personality, or simply his outlook on life. Adding to his positivity, Clooney has donated large amounts to a variety of charities. His successful acting career reflects on who he is in real life. The constant theme in the movies he stars in is “doing the right thing as opposed to the expedient thing” (Blackman xxvii). Whether it is how he treats others, donating to
Even though entertainers can influence others to make a difference, they themselves don’t do anything to
Using your celebrity to make a difference is something many people do. Many people like Katherine Hepburn who won four academy awards for Best Actress, and is known for playing strong-willed women in her film roles. Walking around in a masculine style, she was the first actress to not conform to what society told her to wear. If it was not for Katherine wearing trousers that it would not be so sociably acceptable for women to wear
We are part of a generation that is obsessed with celebrity culture. Celebrities are distinctive. Media and consumers alike invented them to be a different race of super beings: flawless, divine and above all the real moral world. In a 1995 New York Times article “In contrast, 9 out of 10 of those polled could think of something
In conclusion, although there are some celebrities who are selfish and don’t care about others, there are some who do. The ones that do, give as much as the can to help others make their lives better.
I believed that this article was important to the entertainment industry in the segment of celebrity endorsements. When celebrities, such as George Clooney and Julia Roberts that are idolized by the American public, endorse a product, or give their opinion on a controversial subject, they usually have a following of their fans that agree with them. People tend to trust celebrities and their opinions on subjects. This very great power was illustrated well during the telethon in discussion. When this power is misused or used to benefit the celebrity at the cost of victims of a horrible tragedy, the public image of the celebrities involved becomes marred. During this telethon, many celebrities told us that one hundred percent of the money donated would go directly to the victims of September 11.
Several celebrities like actors, musicians, athletes or comedians establish plenty of positive self-images which can motivate or inspire many young people. Plenty of celebrities’ names have been used for encouraging voting, raising funds for victims from natural disaster and creating a charity, or many campaigns like anti-violence or anti-AIDS. There are many celebrities who give back to society. The positive side of celebrities can inspire people. People may do some charity for giving back, do well at school and avoid many troubles (Muhammad). Many of them turn their fame to work for various organizations that help people such as Angelina Jolie became a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador; she helped many refugees around the world. Moreover, she and her husband, Brad Pitt, have created the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which aims to focus on the poverty and provides elementary and secondary education also protect natural resources and wildlife (Celebrities Using Their Fame to Do Good). Additionally, Shakira, a famous singer, has founded the organization “Pies Descalzos Foundation” that provides the education for people in Colombia, South Africa and Haiti (Celebrities Using Their Fame to Do Good). And many celebrities turn their bad experiences to inspire many people. For examples, Martar Steward, who had been in jail for five months, becomes a woman giving a good lesson from her failure and success that can
