For years, society has been interested in celebrities to the extent that some are obsessed. Collin Palmer, a high school sophomore, expressed his opinions on celebrities and their so-called bad influences on us. Some of Palmer’s points are agreeable, like how fans of celebrities don’t want to copy their bad behavior and how the gossip gives something to talk about with others, but others are not agreeable, like how being obsessed with celebrities are a healthy escape from reality. Interest in celebrities is healthy, but not obsession. Brad Paisley, an American country singer and songwriter, wrote a song called "Celebrity" mocking celebrities, proving even further that the mistakes celebrities make do not have a huge impact on our behavior. Deborah King, the author of "The Impact Celebrities Have On Our Lives," includes points that agree with both Palmer’s and Paisley’s. To live a perfect life is a desire that people hold. They want to live in the perfect world that they think celebrities live in. Fans strive to achieve their goal of being just like a famous role model. In Palmer’s essay, he included his own brother’s personal experience of making a goal based on the career that his role model had. There are good celebrities as well as bad, and they inspire dreams. Inspiration usually comes from a famous person who has achieved the same goal that others have had. A singer might inspire a follower to strive for their goal of a music career, or an athlete might encourage someone to work harder towards their ambition to be an athlete. Obsession with stars is not healthy. We were not made to just sit around and watch the actions of others. Interest in them is okay; we humans need a source of entertainment.
